Buffalo Truck Stop: Africa’s answer to the world’s best

Buffalo Truck Stop is setting a new benchmark in East London, offering world-class security, wellness, and services while prioritising drivers’ dignity, safety, and efficiency. It is also strengthening South Africa’s logistics network and competitiveness.

In the heart of East London, a quiet revolution is reshaping South Africa’s road freight industry. Buffalo Truck Stop, developed by Truckstops Africa, is far more than a rest point for weary drivers – it’s a statement of intent.

The truck stop represents a vision of dignity, safety, and efficiency that places South Africa alongside the world’s most advanced trucking nations. “We built Buffalo Truck Stop from the ground up with drivers’ needs at its core: safety, respect, and rest,” says Joe Letswalo, principal officer of the Transport Sector Retirement Fund (TSRF).

Inspired by the world, built for Africa

In global trucking circles, names like Iowa 80 (USA), Route 24 Truckstop (UK), and DAF Village (Netherlands) set the benchmark for excellence, offering secure parking, quality food, repair bays, and wellness services. Now, Buffalo Truck Stop proudly joins that conversation – an African facility built to international standards, infused with local heart and purpose. Unlike many foreign counterparts designed for vast fleets, Buffalo was created by the transport industry, for the transport industry. Its mission: to make South African roads safer, drivers healthier, and logistics operations more efficient.

The vision: A network of dignity and safety

The idea was born within the TSRF after members – truck drivers themselves – voiced concerns about the lack of safe, secure rest stops. Working with Stellenbosch University and the CSIR, TSRF identified the urgent need for facilities where drivers could park without fear, sleep comfortably, and access basic health care. “Our members told us what they needed, and we listened,” emphasises Letswalo.

East London was selected through the Pareto Principle – as one of the top 20% of sites that could yield 80% of the impact. The site filled a critical gap in a logistics corridor long underserved by quality overnight facilities.

World-class facilities with a South African soul

Step inside Buffalo Truck Stop and you’ll find an environment that rivals – and in some ways surpasses – international offerings:

• 24-hour controlled access and cloud-based tracking with licence plate recognition, floodlights, and roaming security.

• A commercial fuel canopy with high-speed pumps, lubricants, and AdBlue.

• On-site workshops from Scania, Aero Truck, and Hi-Q Commercial Tyres, ensuring trucks are maintained while drivers rest.

• Clean, spacious ablutions, laundry services, and 32 comfortable overnight rooms for drivers without sleeper cabs.

• A bustling canteen and outdoor braai area serving nutritious, affordable meals.

• A Wellness Clinic run in partnership with Trucking Wellness, offering evening health services tailored for long-haul drivers.

• A gym, truck wash, and public retail forecourt featuring PnP Go, Steers, LPG gas, and car wash facilities.

“Buffalo Truck Stop is not just about rest – it’s about respect,” says the Motor Transport Workers Union’s Mdumiseni Mabaso.

Technology that protects

The At-the-Gate digital entry system logs every truck, driver, and exit time in the cloud. This system rivals the FleetSecure technologies used at Europe’s leading stops – ensuring both vehicle and payload remain under constant protection. It’s one of the reasons transport companies call Buffalo “the safest truck stop in South Africa”.

Wellness on the road

Long hours and stress take a toll on driver health. Buffalo’s Wellness Clinic ensures truckers receive basic medical care and counselling – a feature often found in high-end North American stops but rare in Africa. Through the joint initiative of donors such as the industry, unions, employers and the National Bargaining Council for the Road Freight and Logistics Industry (NBCRFLI), a growing network of Wellness Clinics has been established providing medical services for the well-being of truck drivers and Buffalo Truck Stop is proud to be part of this network.

Commitment to sustainability

Buffalo Truck Stop is EDGE-certified (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies), achieving more than 20% savings in energy, water, and embodied carbon. It’s part of a global move toward greener logistics, positioning South Africa at the forefront of sustainable transport infrastructure.

A partner to fleet owners

For transport operators and fleet managers, Buffalo offers cost-saving security, simplified account systems, and on-site maintenance – reducing downtime and operational risk.

It’s no surprise, then, that transport companies nationwide are signing up as registered users, citing the reliability and professionalism of Buffalo’s operations.

“We also accept all major fleet cards and third party fuel management solutions,” says Marc Olivier, general site manager of Buffalo Truck Stop.

Room to grow

With 490m² of prime workshop and warehouse space still available, Buffalo invites logistics-aligned tenants – from truck service centres to courier firms – to join the ecosystem.

The vision? A national network of truck stops that uplift both industry standards and economic opportunity. “Truck stops are infrastructure investments that deliver long-term value to the entire logistics chain,” notes Truckstops Africa director, Ignatius Kruger.

Driving Africa forward

Buffalo Truck Stop is more than a facility – it’s a movement. It proves that African infrastructure can meet and even surpass the world’s best, while preserving what makes the continent unique: community, resilience, and purpose.

As Truckstops Africa expands its network, each new site will continue the mission: safer roads, healthier drivers, and a stronger logistics industry.
