2025 Fleet Safety Awards: it’s almost time to meet the winners!

2025 Fleet Safety Awards: it’s almost time to meet the winners!

Now in their fourth iteration, the 2025 Fleet Safety Awards recognise excellence in road safety among fleets, drivers, organisations, and facilities, while expanding to include sustainability in fleet operations.

Launched in 2022, the Fleet Safety Awards have grown in stature. In 2025, they enter their fourth year with increased stakes: entrants now stand a chance to win a share of R250,000 in cash and prizes. The entry window opened at the South African Association for Fleet Professionals (AFP) Colloquium, and fleet operators, individuals, and service providers were encouraged to submit their applications.

This year also brings two new sustainability categories, a strategic move reflecting the evolving demands of fleet operations under climate and regulatory pressures.

Categories that define excellence

The 2025 Awards cover a wide array of categories to fairly reward excellence across the sector. Key categories include:

  • Best Organisation – recognising companies with robust safety programmes, measurable success and a culture that prioritises safety (with sustainability in view).
  • Best Fleet Manager – an individual who goes beyond standards to instil safety and innovation in operations.
  • Road Warrior – a professional driver excelling in safe driving, leadership and environmental responsibility.
  • Most Improved Truck Stop – rewarding facilities which improve safety, driver welfare, and sustainable operations.
  • Sustainability Leadership (new in 2025) – for fleets maintaining exemplary safety while committing to environmental practices.
  • Sustainability Innovation (new in 2025) – recognising organisations whose products or services help others reduce environmental impact.

These additions aim to prompt more operators to think beyond just safety, encouraging a holistic view that includes environmental impact and long-term viability. Headline partners supporting the 2025 Awards include FNB, Castrol, Santam, MAG, Automechanika, Tracker and others across the transport, insurance and safety sectors. FOCUS and its sister publication, SHEQ MANAGEMENT, are the official media partners.

Rising ambitions and stronger expectations

Growth targets for 2025 are ambitious: the organisers aim to double the number of entries from the 250 achieved in 2024. The addition of sustainability categories and more prize money demonstrates the Awards’ evolution to meet growing industry expectations.

MasterDrive’s CEO, Eugene Herbert, notes that the Awards now respond to the convergence of road safety and environmental responsibility: “The Fleet Safety Awards are   evolving… (they) recognise the importance of sustainable business practices – no fleet strategy would be complete if one did not consider the impact on the environment.”

What this means for South African fleets

For transport operators in South Africa, the 2025 Fleet Safety Awards present a valuable opportunity – to validate efforts, benchmark performance, and gain recognition across the industry. The inclusion of environmental and sustainability criteria is timely, given global pressure and regulatory momentum toward greener operations.

Winning or even being shortlisted can bolster reputation, morale, and stakeholder confidence in a company’s approach to road safety and environmental stewardship.

The winners will be named and celebrated at a prize-giving on 29 October – look out for a special feature on the companies and individuals who represent the crème de la crème of safety in South Africa in our November issue.
