Japanese Hino will again be the only entry from an Asian truck manufacturer contesting the Dakar Rally, taking place in Saudi Arabia from January 3-17, 2026.

💪 For the 35th consecutive time a Hino vehicle – the 600 Series racing truck – will compete in this famous endurance rally-raid. Demonstrating exceptional reliability, Hino’s truck has finished the race every time.

This year a strong field of 46 trucks from eight different OEMs has entered, with teams from Eastern and Western Europe. Iveco, with 20 entries, is the most popular truck. It is joined by MAN with 13 entries, Tatra and DAF (three each), Renault and Scania (two each), and Mercedes-Benz and Volvo (one each).

🐫 The 2026 Dakar Rally will start and finish in the port city of Yanbu with a route that takes an 8,000km loop through Saudi Arabia, including 5,000km of timed racing sections.

South Africa’s fuel security lifeline was in the spotlight in Parliament last week – and the message was unmistakable.

⛽ The Fuels Industry Association of South Africa warned MPs that the Durban Island View Precinct (IVP) is not just another port facility. It is the country’s primary energy gateway, handling:
🔹 72% of all liquid fuel imports
🔹 93% of petrol imports
🔹 71% of diesel imports

📉 Years of uncertainty under Transnet’s Island View Strategy have already slowed critical investment, dropping from R2.4bn (2018) to just around R500m in 2021/22. Yet operators have kept national supply stable against the odds.

💡 Now, the Minister’s Section 79 Direction gives the certainty needed to safeguard infrastructure, protect supply chains and unlock R60bn in new investment.

For the transport, logistics and fuels sectors, this is one of the biggest strategic moves of 2025.

A new global study by Scrap Car Comparison, which surveyed over 3500 drivers across 18 countries, explored how age shapes global attitudes to driving skill, confidence and safety.

𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮:
👴 Around 29% of South Africans think people should consider giving up driving in their 60s, the highest proportion of any country in the study and more than double that of the next highest country.

🚚 88% of South Africans say they would not feel safe being a passenger with a driver over 80, significantly higher than the 77% global average.

🏆 Millennial drivers are the most trusted on South African roads, with 41% of respondents feeling safest with someone aged 35-44.

❗Two-thirds (67%) of South Africans believe under-25s take the most risks on the road, slightly lower than Australia (90%) and the UK (88%).

⌛ 74% agree that experience is the biggest factor in driving ability.

The BBC has uncovered a scam where organised gangs in the UK buy haulage firms, pose as subcontractors and steal valuable cargo – sometimes using fake identities.

🚚 Losses jumped to £111m last year, with criminals targeting trucks during deliveries and even slashing the curtained sides of vehicles to access goods like designer clothes and electronics.

The fraud follows a pattern seen in Europe, where legitimate companies facing bankruptcy are bought by organised crime groups, who then steal the goods they’re contracted to collect.

🚓 Authorities and industry leaders are calling for urgent action and a national strategy to tackle these increasingly sophisticated crimes.

📢 In South Africa a woman is murdered every 2.5 hours. That's 15 women every single day.

While you read this blog post and enjoy your morning coffee, another South African woman becomes a statistic.

Gender-based violence includes physical abuse, sexual assault, emotional abuse, economic abuse and femicide – the killing of women. It affects women across all races, classes and communities.

On 21 November, Women for Change SA is calling on women to stay away from work for a day in protest, to not spend any money and to wear black in solidarity with victims of gender-based violence.

At 12pm midday, women are encouraged to join a 15-minute standstill by lying down to honour the 15 women murdered every day in the country.

The message is clear: “Until South Africa stops burying a woman every 2.5 hours, the G20 cannot speak of growth and progress.”
