IS THE SOUTH AFRICAN USED TRUCK MARKET IN CRISIS?

Rumours have circulated within South Africa’s commercial vehicle industry for months, suggesting a massive oversupply of used trucks. But is this really the case? CHARLEEN CLARKE asked industry insiders to shed light on whether the market is truly in a crisis – and what is driving current trends.

Stig Hoffner works at Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolag (LKAB), a state-owned Swedish mining company. The company mines iron ore at Kiruna and Malmberget in northern Sweden. Hoffner loves his job so much that he doesn’t want to retire. Why? Because he gets to drive Scania’s electric truck every day. Since late 2022, LKAB has used the truck at the company’s iron ore mine in Malmberget. The Scania 25P XT all-electric heavy tipper can carry 49 tonnes of load and transports residual products. Watch The Stig (sorry, we couldn’t resist that) and his truck in action here!
