Iveco brings S-Way Frontier 560 to Truck Test 2026
Iveco has joined the 20-truck field for Truck Test 2026, entering its S-Way Frontier 560 to face South Africaโs biggest extra-heavy vehicle comparison under real-world operating conditions.
Iveco has entered this yearโs Truck Test with the S-Way Frontier 560 AS440S56TZ ON+, taking the total number of participating trucks to 20.
Thirteen OEMs will put their vehicles through real-world conditions from 10 to 12 November in what will be the largest extra-heavy truck comparison yet staged in South Africa. The key measure will be the productivity index, which considers fuel consumption against average speed over the route.
Power and efficiency
At the heart of the S-Way Frontier 560 is Ivecoโs 13-litre Cursor engine, producing 560hp and 2,500Nm of torque. It is paired with a 12-speed Hi-Tronix automated transmission with direct drive.
The drivetrain incorporates several systems aimed at improving fuel efficiency. Eco-Roll disengages the driveline on suitable descents, while Ecoswitch adjusts gearshift and performance parameters according to load. Ecofleet is designed to encourage more economical driving regardless of driver style.
A 2.83:1 rear axle ratio keeps engine revs relatively low at cruising speed, while the truck is electronically governed to 80km/h. An anti-idling function can also switch off the engine during extended stationary periods, such as loading, depot or border-post delays.
The ON+ specification adds extra structural durability for light off-road and cross-border conditions. Rocking Mode software is also included to help free the truck from mud or soft sand.
Built for demanding routes
The S-Way Frontier 560 is rated for a 60-tonne gross combination weight and uses heavy-duty rear parabolic suspension. Rear dampers and stabiliser bars are fitted to support stability under heavy loads. A 770-litre fuel tank provides long-distance range without adding excessive weight. The truck also uses a RACOR pre-filter to help protect the engineโs fuel system from contaminated diesel.
Safety equipment includes all-wheel disc brakes, a hydraulic retarder, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, advanced emergency braking, electronic stability program and hill hold.
An integrated tyre pressure monitoring system helps drivers and fleet managers identify pressure issues that could affect safety, tyre life and fuel consumption. A mechanical anti-syphon mesh adds protection against diesel theft, while a factory immobiliser provides another layer of security.
Driver comfort matters
Long-haul productivity depends on the driver as much as the drivetrain. The S-Wayโs AS high-roof cab provides standing room, storage and an air-suspended heated seat. There are two bunks, and the compact upper bunk can be folded away when not in use. A 50-litre fridge and 50-litre cooler box support extended trips, while blackout curtains, a roof hatch and infotainment and navigation systems are also fitted. Connectivity is provided through an FMS data interface, allowing integration with fleet telematics systems. A factory-fitted PTO and cab preparation also allow integration of hydraulic equipment for applications such as side-tippers and moving-floor trailers.ย
Now for the test
Truck Test 2026 will show how these features perform under the same conditions as 19 competing trucks. The comparison will also provide a useful indication of how the S-Way Frontier 560โs long-haul specification translates into practical day-to-day operating performance for fleets.
Of course, for fleet operators, the key question will not be the length of the specification sheet, but how efficiently the Iveco converts fuel into productive kilometres while maintaining pace, safety and driver comfort. That answer will come in Novemberโฆ
