UD Trucks stars at Japan Mobility Show
In keeping with its leading position within the Japanese commercial vehicle industry, UD Trucks played a starring role at the Japan Mobility Show (previously the Tokyo Motor Show).
The 2023 Japan Mobility Show was fascinating – not least because it gave visitors an insight into the Japanese commercial vehicle industry. During the company’s press conference, UD president Kouji Maruyama highlighted a number of challenges to be addressed in Japan’s transport industry. These include the long working hours of truck drivers, an increase in deliveries due to the rapid expansion of e-commerce, and the impending 2024 work reform legislation.
The legislation pertains to working hours for truck drivers: in April next year, the Japanese government intends to introduce an overtime cap limiting them to 960 hours a year. The Japan Trucking Association has warned that the cap could cause changes to services that have become convenient norms for consumers (deliveries of fresh seafood, fruit and vegetables, or same- and next-day deliveries, for instance).
UD Trucks is very mindful of these potential problems. “In order to encourage more people to enter the logistics industry and thrive, the Isuzu Group is promoting various initiatives so that drivers will find it a rewarding profession,” said Maruyama.
FLAGSHIP QUON ON DISPLAY
The Quon GW 6×4, which was displayed on the company’s stand, is one potential drawcard for drivers. UD’s flagship truck boasts the next-generation 12-speed electronically controlled ESCOT-VII automatic transmission and UD Active Steering for precise and stable steering. Superior braking power is provided by disc brakes – unique among Japanese truck manufacturers.
Launched in Japan in April of this year, the robust Quon GW 6×4 combines power with fuel efficiency, offering exceptional driveability, braking, and comfort.
“This is the first heavy-duty tractor jointly developed by Isuzu and UD Trucks,” Maruyama elaborated. “It puts people and cargo first, helping reduce driver fatigue while improving transportation efficiency.”
As the company’s flagship model, the Quon GW 6×4 exemplifies UD Trucks’ dedication to providing powerful yet fuel-efficient solutions. With superior driveability, advanced braking systems, and a focus on driver comfort, this heavy-duty vehicle is testament to the brand’s pursuit of excellence. The integration of innovative features reflects UD Trucks’ understanding of the evolving needs of the transportation industry.
“Achieving overwhelming power and torque delivered from the 13-litre engine, the truck is fuel efficient and easy to drive thanks to ESCOT and UD Active Steering technology. It also boasts a smooth combination of disc brakes and industry-leading auxiliary brakes,” pointed out Maruyama.
Fuel efficiency has become a critical factor in the commercial vehicle sector, driven by both economic and environmental considerations. UD Trucks has responded to this demand by incorporating advanced fuel-saving technologies into its vehicles. The Quon GW 6×4, for instance, leverages engineering solutions to optimise fuel consumption without compromising on performance. This not only benefits the operators in terms of cost savings, but also aligns with global efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of commercial transportation.
Driveability is another area where UD Trucks has excelled, recognising that a comfortable and intuitive driving experience contributes to both safety and productivity. The Quon GW 6×4 features enhancements that make it not only powerful but also easy to handle, ensuring that drivers can navigate diverse road conditions with confidence. The emphasis on superior braking systems further underscores UD Trucks’ commitment to safety, a crucial aspect in the commercial vehicle industry.
“As a truck manufacturer, we always put drivers first and try to stay one step ahead in addressing challenges faced by the industry today. We hope that all drivers will find that the new 6×4 Quon is easier to drive since it helps reduce fatigue associated with long-haul driving, giving them energy for tomorrow,” stressed Maruyama.
“Powerful yet fuel efficient, it is our flagship model that redefines the standard for hauling heavy goods. It is easy to drive and puts both people and cargo first. It is truly a vehicle that drivers can take pride in as they play their own role in keeping society moving,” he continued.
QUESTER HAS PRIDE OF PLACE
The Quester GWE 6×4 – equipped with the UD selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system – also enjoyed pride of place on the stand. “This is a heavy-duty tractor for emerging markets. The Quester celebrated its 10th anniversary this year,” noted Maruyama.
The first Quester began its journey in 2013 in Thailand and, over the last 10 years, Questers have taken to the road in over 46 countries – including South Africa – across four continents.
In the last decade, the Quester lineup has expanded to feature a range of 13 configurations, showcasing its remarkable versatility for businesses. This encompasses the introduction of a novel eight-litre GH8E engine alongside the 11-litre GH11E variant, both engineered for substantial torque output and efficient fuel consumption through low engine speed operation.
The available horsepower options span from 250 to 460hp, and buyers can also choose between a nine-speed or 12-speed gearbox together with single or hub reduction drive axles. Additionally, the Quester offers an array of axle configurations, including 4×2, 6×2, 6×4, 8×2, and 8×4, with the first three configurations available for both tractor and rigid applications. The Quester’s high-roof large cab option also offers class-leading space for driver’s comfort.
AUTONOMY TO THE FORE
Yet another interesting exhibit was the “Fujin” test vehicle. UD Trucks and Kobe Steel have been conducting an autonomous driving trial at the latter’s Kakogawa Works, using a heavy-duty Quon equipped with Level 4 autonomous driving technology. While it still needs a driver, driverless vehicles represent the obvious end goal.
“Autonomous driving technology will continue to evolve, ushering in a world where buses operate on specific routes and trucks run along pre-determined points within worksites. Fujin is a test vehicle that opens up a new world in which people and vehicles work together. It is but one example of the Isuzu Group’s autonomous driving initiatives,” enthused Maruyama.
INNOVATION PLUS LEGACY MEETS SUCCESS
One of the key factors contributing to UD Trucks’ leading position is its relentless commitment to innovation. Products such as the Quon, Quester, and Fujin, coupled with the brand’s proud heritage, bode extremely well for its future. With a rich history dating back several decades, the brand has evolved into a symbol of quality and efficiency in the transportation sector.
In the highly competitive Japanese market, UD Trucks has furthermore distinguished itself by consistently delivering reliable and durable vehicles. The brand’s commitment to quality is reflected in the materials used, manufacturing processes, and rigorous testing procedures applied to each vehicle. This dedication to reliability has earned UD Trucks the trust of fleet operators, businesses, and drivers across Japan as well its export markets, including South Africa.
Furthermore, UD Trucks has established a comprehensive support network to ensure that its vehicles continue to perform optimally throughout their lifecycle. This includes a robust maintenance and service infrastructure, providing timely assistance and genuine spare parts to address the specific needs of the company’s diverse customer base.
As the demand for sustainable and efficient commercial vehicles grows, UD Trucks is well-positioned to meet the evolving needs of the industry while maintaining its reputation for excellence and focus on innovation.
“We believe that, through autonomous driving, people and technology can work together to create higher value-added jobs. We will continue to promote such efforts to help solve logistics challenges and realise a more prosperous society,” Maruyama emphasised at the Japan Mobility Show.
A more prosperous society? That can only be good news for us all.
