UD Trucks Southern Africa (UDTSA) used its 2026 media briefing to show how its strategy, product innovation and commitment to uptime are paying dividends. JULIA TEW says the event also reaffirmed the company’s unwavering focus on customer satisfaction.
Despite a rapidly changing and unpredictable operating environment โ marked by rising input costs, fuel volatility and infrastructure pressures โ UDTSA continues to deliver resilient performance, reinforcing customer confidence in the brandโs ability to support long-term business sustainability. This was according to Filip Van den Heede, the companyโs managing director, who noted that UDTSAโs resilience is reflected in its strong annual performance. The firm achieved an overall new-vehicle market share of 8%, with aggregate industry sales rising to 31,652 units, up from 31,190 units in 2024. The aftermarket business also posted robust growth, with service agreement uptake at ย about 50%.

Product innovation brought to life on track
A highlight of the event was a dynamic ride-and-drive session, giving media the opportunity to experience the UD Quon and Quester in real-world driving conditions. The session reinforced the UD Trucks philosophy of designing vehicles that deliver measurable performance where it matters most: on the road.
The UD Quon, UDTSAโs flagship long-haul model, continues to set the benchmark for innovation in the range. Engineered for demanding heavy-duty applications such as those in the petrochemical sector, Quon combines advanced technology, high productivity and safety, and superior uptime to support customers operating under intense commercial pressure.
โThe Quon represents the pinnacle of UD innovation โ from performance and safety to driver comfort and connectivity. It is engineered for customers who demand more from their vehicles,โ said Van den Heede.
UD Quester: built around what matters most
Also showcased was the latest iteration of the UD Quester, reflecting the continued evolution of a truck that has played a critical role in UDTSAโs success across global growth markets. First launched in 2013, Quester has built a strong reputation for efficiency, durability and versatility across applications including long haul, general cargo, construction and waste management.
The truckโs features are driven directly by customer insight, with a clear focus on fuel efficiency, safety, driver comfort and uptime โ key factors influencing total profit over life (TPOL).
Key features on the teal-coloured UD Quester 2026 include its Easy and Safe Controlled Transmission (ESCOT) 12-speed direct-drive gearbox โ a fast-responding automated manual transmission with built-in intelligence to improve fuel efficiency and drive consistency. A four-stage retarder slows the truck on downhills, enhancing braking performance and vehicle control while reducing brake wear and accident risk. UD Stability Control supports rollover prevention and directional stability, while the driver airbag reinforces occupant safety. The refreshed cab interior is designed around driver comfort and usability, and the cab exterior boasts a new chrome grille and novel light fixtures.

With fuel costs accounting for a significant portion of fleet operating expenses, Questerโs engineering โ supported by efficient powertrains, intuitive driving support systems and UD Connected Services โ enables customers to extract more kilometres per litre while maintaining performance and reliability.
Uptime as a strategic advantage
Uptime remains a cornerstone of UDTSAโs value proposition. Through proactive maintenance planning, predictive servicing and rapid breakdown support, the company continues to help customers minimise unplanned downtime and protect productivity.
โUptime is about anticipation, not reaction,โ said Sanjay Naipal, aftermarket director at UDTSA. โBy combining proactive, telematics-driven maintenance solutions with strong dealer support and connected services, we help customers manage costs, protect productivity and keep their fleets moving, even in demanding operating conditions.โ
He revealed UDTSAโs plans to launch a custom-produced UD Dashcam in April this year, as part of its enhanced telematics offerings.
Retail excellence and global recognition
UDTSA continues to invest in its dealer network, recognising that strong retail environments are critical to customer experience and uptime. Recent milestones highlighted by Naipal included the opening of new dealerships alongside the expansion and upgrading of others across the country.
Dealer excellence was further recognised on the global stage at the 2025 UD Partner Conference in Japan, where South African dealers received multiple awards.
