Truck Test 2026 breaks all records

Truck Test 2026 breaks all records

Truck Test 2026 is set to make history. Not only will it be the biggest truck test ever staged in South Africa, but it is also shaping up to be the largest of its kind on the African continent โ€“ and, by many measures, one of the most significant truck comparison events anywhere in the world.

With a total of 16 trucks lining up for evaluation, the scale of this yearโ€™s event is unprecedented. For fleet operators, manufacturers and the broader logistics sector, Truck Test 2026 represents far more than a competition โ€“ it is a defining industry benchmark.

โ€œThis is without question the most ambitious Truck Test we have ever undertaken,โ€ says Charleen Clarke, editorial director of FOCUS on Transport & Logistics, which organises the event. โ€œThe sheer scale of participation, the calibre of the partners and the depth of industry support make this a truly landmark event.โ€

Record-breaking event

Taking place from 3 to 5 November, Truck Test 2026 will once again put the latest extra-heavy commercial vehicles through their paces under real-world operating conditions. The objective remains clear: to generate credible, independent data that enables transport operators to make informed, high-value purchasing decisions.

In todayโ€™s climate, that objective has never been more relevant. โ€œWith fuel prices escalating the way they are, Truck Test could not be coming at a better time,โ€ Clarke emphasises. โ€œOperators are under enormous pressure to improve efficiency and reduce costs. What we are providing is real-world insight into how these trucks actually perform where it matters โ€“ on the road.โ€

World-class line-up

The 2026 line-up features leading global manufacturers, including Daewoo, DAF, FAW, MAN, Mercedes-Benz, Powerstar, Scania, Shacman, Sinotruk and Volvo Trucks. These brands will compete across a demanding test programme designed to measure productivity, efficiency, safety and operational performance.

At its core, Truck Test is a productivity exercise. Each vehicle is assessed based on fuel consumption and speed over a defined route, with the results combined into a productivity index. This index reflects a simple but critical question: how much work can a truck perform per litre of fuel, and how efficiently can it complete the task?

โ€œThatโ€™s the information operators need,โ€ says Clarke. โ€œThese are multimillion-rand investments. Decisions cannot be based on marketing claims โ€“ they need to be based on independent, comparable data.โ€

The science behind the test

Ensuring that the testing process remains objective and scientifically robust is the responsibility of TruckScience, which returns as the official technical partner. TruckScience compiles and analyses all vehicle data, ensuring that comparisons are accurate, transparent and meaningful.

Equally critical is the role played by Afrit, which will supply the identical, precision-engineered trailers that will be pulled by every truck in the test. This standardisation is essential: without it, comparisons of fuel consumption and performance would be fundamentally flawed. โ€œAfritโ€™s involvement ensures that every truck is tested under exactly the same conditions,โ€ Clarke explains. โ€œThatโ€™s what makes the results credible.โ€

Tyres are another key, yet often overlooked, variable โ€“ and this is where Bandag comes in as the official tyre partner. With decades of expertise in retreading and tyre performance, Bandag stands out through its fleet-focused approach, combining products, services and data to maximise uptime, reliability and cost efficiency. Its extensive dealer network ensures consistent, predictable performance and support, keeping vehicles operational and delivering dependable results across diverse fleet environments. โ€œTyres have a massive impact on fuel consumption,โ€ Clarke notes. โ€œBandagโ€™s role is absolutely fundamental to the integrity of the test.โ€

The official fuel and lubrication partner is Engen, which supplies all the fuel used during the event. At a time when fuel costs are rising sharply, this contribution is greatly valued. โ€œWe all know how important fuel efficiency has become,โ€ says Clarke. โ€œEvery litre counts โ€“ and Truck Test is all about understanding how to use those litres most effectively.โ€

Beyond engineering: maintenance and monitoring

The technical ecosystem is further strengthened by ZF, the official aftermarket partner. ZF brings a crucial perspective on the role of drivetrain and component condition in overall vehicle performance. โ€œA truck is only as good as its components,โ€ Clarke stresses. โ€œZF reminds us that performance is not just about design โ€“ itโ€™s about maintenance and optimisation.โ€

Meanwhile, WearCheck provides advanced condition monitoring through oil analysis, offering valuable insights into engine health and performance under load. โ€œWearCheck adds another layer of understanding,โ€ elaborates Clarke. โ€œItโ€™s not just about which truck performs best on the day โ€“ itโ€™s about how those engines are behaving under pressure.โ€

Strong industry endorsement

Beyond the technical partners, Truck Test 2026 has received strong endorsement from leading industry bodies. These include the Road Freight Association (RFA), Southern African Association of Freight Forwarders (SAAFF), the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport South Africa (CILTSA) and SAPICS.

โ€œThe endorsement from these organisations is hugely significant,โ€ Clarke says. โ€œIt confirms that Truck Test reflects the priorities of the broader transport and logistics sector. When bodies like the SAAFF, CILTSA and SAPICS support an initiative like this, it sends a powerful message about its credibility and relevance.โ€

Real-world conditions, real-world results

The test route itself adds another layer of authenticity. Designed to replicate real-world operating conditions, it includes a mix of highways, secondary roads and challenging gradients. The route reflects the demanding environments in which South African trucks operate daily, ensuring that results are directly applicable to real-life scenarios.

Weather and road conditions will, as always, play their part. These variables cannot be controlled โ€“ and that is precisely the point. โ€œTruck Test is not a laboratory exercise,โ€ Clarke explains. โ€œItโ€™s a real-world test. Thatโ€™s why the results carry so much weight with operators.โ€

Raising the bar for the industry

As the event approaches, anticipation is building across the industry. For manufacturers, the stakes are high: performance in Truck Test influences purchasing decisions and shapes brand perception. For operators, the value lies in the data โ€“ independent, transparent and directly relevant to their businesses.

For Clarke, however, the significance of Truck Test 2026 goes even further. โ€œThis is about more than just results,โ€ she emphasises. โ€œItโ€™s about advancing the industry, improving standards and giving operators the data they need to succeed in an increasingly challenging environment.โ€

With its record-breaking scale, world-class partners and strong industry endorsement, Truck Test 2026 is set to deliver emphatically on that promise.
