Goodyear’s sustainable tyre makes truck racing debut
A new generation of Goodyear racing tyres has made its competitive debut. The tyres were first seen at the season opener of the Goodyear Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) European Truck Racing Championship (ETRC), as the trucks hit the track in Misano, Italy.
In a significant step for motorsport and mobility innovation, Goodyear has introduced a new truck racing tyre composed of 55% sustainable materials. This was achieved through the use of carefully selected ingredients, including silica produced from waste rice husk ash and carbon black sourced from alternative feedstocks. The significant advancement marks Goodyear’s continued commitment to developing high-performance solutions that address both competitive and environmental demands.
Goodyear has been a key player in the European Truck Racing Championship since 2003, continuously advancing tyre technology to push the performance boundaries of race trucks. The Goodyear FIA ETRC serves as a platform for testing next-generation tyre solutions, with insights from the racetrack directly informing the development of Goodyear’s commercial truck tyres.
“With the introduction of Goodyear’s next-generation 55% sustainable-material racing tyre, we have taken another step toward the sustainability transformation of our truck racing series,” says Georg Fuchs, managing director of ETRA. “This partnership demonstrates that sustainability and performance can go hand in hand, paving the way for a more responsible future in both racing and road transport.”
“The Goodyear FIA ETRC serves as an additional proving ground for the latest advancements in truck tyre technology,” adds Maciej Szymański, Goodyear marketing director, commercial EMEA. “By increasing the share of sustainable materials in our racing tyres, we not only support the championship’s sustainability agenda, but also pave the way for broader innovations that benefit the entire transport industry.”
The introduction of Goodyear’s 55% sustainable-material truck racing tyres aligns with the Goodyear FIA ETRC’s ongoing sustainability journey. The championship has been running on 100% renewable hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) biofuel since 2021. It holds the FIA’s three-star environmental accreditation – the highest level in the framework.
Goodyear also earned this top-tier certification, extending beyond the FIA ETRC to its wider motorsport programmes, including the FIA World Endurance Championship, 24 Hours of Le Mans, and European Le Mans Series. Additionally, Goodyear remains committed to retreading truck racing tyres, repurposing them for commercial transport applications to reduce waste and enhance resource efficiency.
First introduced last season, Goodyear’s latest truck racing tyre features an advanced compound designed to enhance grip, particularly in wet conditions. In the Goodyear FIA ETRC, regulations require a single tyre to perform consistently across a wide range of circuits and weather conditions – from dry and hot to wet and cold surfaces. The latest design also improves durability, reducing the total number of tyres used throughout the championship and helping teams maintain optimal performance while improving tyre usage efficiency.
Goodyear applied the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) Plus sustainability certification system and a mass-balance approach to ensure transparency and accountability in tracking sustainable materials throughout the supply chain. The ISCC Plus sustainability certification system is a voluntary, globally recognised certification scheme designed to verify and track the sustainability of materials across supply chains – especially those involving biomass, recycled materials, bio-based feedstocks, and circular economy inputs.
- The season opener was won by Norbert Kiss, who enjoyed a flawless weekend, securing four race victories.
