As part of its fleet expansion programme, AP Moller-Maersk has finalised an order for 26 18,600-TEU LNG dual-fuel large container ships, with delivery scheduled for 2029 and 2030.

🛠️ Sources indicate that the vessels will be built jointly by two Chinese shipbuilders, Hengli Heavy Industries and New Times Shipbuilding.

The total value of the new vessels is estimated at $5 billion (over R81 billion) and should increase Maersk’s capacity by 483,600 TEU, according to Alphaliner data.

🔎 Analysis of the audited financial statements of the National Bargaining Council for the Road Freight and Logistics Industry (NBCRFLI) has raised concerns that R2.59 billion in worker benefit assets may have been treated as Council property, with three benefit funds falling short of what they owed for three consecutive years.

This follows an application brought by Innovative Staffing Solutions (ISS) in March 2024 which was later granted by The High Court, which ordered the Council to produce the requested financial documents and, punitively, to pay ISS’s costs. An analysis of the Council’s published financial statements from 2018 to 2025 was subsequently performed.

😲 The Council also did not prepare separate financial statements or audits for the Sick Pay, Holiday Pay, Leave Pay, and Wellness funds, in contravention of legal and statutory requirements. This means each fund’s financial position cannot be assessed independently: it is challenging to see how much money actually belongs to each fund, what it owes and whether it is financially sound on its own.

🗣️ ISS managing director Arnoux Maré is adamant that the Council must address the concerns these statements have brought to light. “Every rand in its benefit funds belongs to a truck driver, a forklift operator or a warehouse worker. Workers should be able to see whether those funds remain properly ring-fenced, whether each fund can meet what it owes to workers, how income earned on that money is being used, and whether it is being used for workers’ benefit.”

🗣️ Parmar notes that commercial transport is moving faster than the passenger vehicle segment, with light-, medium-, heavy- and ultra-heavy-duty electric trucks now available and fleets reporting TCO savings of up to 25%.

Because the economics improve the further a vehicle travels, high-mileage fleets tend to be the first adopters rather than the last, he says.

It was fantastic catching up with Maretha Gerber, President & Group CEO of Daimler Truck Southern Africa – and naturally, we had to go and take a closer look at one of Mercedes-Benz Trucks’ big IAA debuts together: the new eActros Lowliner.

The truck uses up to three 207 kWh LFP battery packs, with series production scheduled to begin in Q2 2027.

But here’s why this truck is A Seriously Big Deal: The eActros 600 Lowliner can travel around 500 km at full load, while its ultra-low fifth-wheel height allows it to work with mega trailers offering an interior height of up to three metres.

That’s impressive! Lowliner trucks are vital in high-volume operations such as automotive logistics, where every cubic metre of trailer space counts. To achieve that three-metre internal height, the tractor has to sit exceptionally low.
Doing that with a battery-electric truck is technically challenging because the batteries and electric drivetrain still need to be packaged without pushing the chassis higher and compromising the trailer’s load volume.

So Mercedes-Benz Trucks has managed to combine long-haul electric range with the huge cargo capacity Lowliner operators depend on. In other words, electrification without sacrificing one of the vehicle’s biggest commercial advantages.

𝗡𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴. 🚛

"Nobody is coming, you only have yourself to look to," said Lebo Rakgekola, the Department Executive of Sales (LCV & SUV) at Isuzu.

Talking to delagates at CILTSA's 2026 Women Empowerment Conference about leading through disruption, she highligted that one of the biggest disruptions being faced in the automotive industry is Chinese entrants that are changing the competitive baseline. However, she noted that disruption is not limited to the workplace. It also happens in your personal life.

Rakgekola emphasised that disruption proofing starts with leadership. Leadership is the ability to learn from your competitors. What worked 5 or 10 years ago, may not work now.

"Are you willing to change?"

To navigate disruption, leaders need learn how to manage their focus, learn the importance of delegating and be a listening ear.

"Manage your energy not only your time. Energy matters. Reflection matters and connection matters. Asking for support matters. Resilience during disruption is not being unshakable. It is knowing what anchors you," shared Rakgekola.

🔥 As concerns over container fires intensify, the World Shipping Council (WSC) is urging governments to close a dangerous loophole that allows containers packed with thousands of lithium batteries to be transported as ordinary cargo without carriers being informed of the risk.

🪫 The issue relates to Special Provision 188 of the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code. Smaller batteries meeting specified testing, packaging and capacity requirements are exempt from some dangerous goods rules, but there is currently no limit on how many can be consolidated inside one container.

⚡️ WSC calculates that a box containing around 4,200 laptops could hold approximately 416kWh of stored energy – comparable with three or four electric vehicles – without requiring dangerous goods documentation or placarding.

🗣️ “Right now, a container can be packed with thousands of lithium batteries and still travel without being declared as dangerous goods,” said WSC president and CEO Joe Kramek. “The SP188 exemption was intended to simplify the transport of individual devices with small batteries, not to make entire container loads invisible.”

The Shacman X6000 560 hp 6×4 tractor with air suspension is the company’s high-roof flagship for demanding trunkline and regional haulage. Combining a Cummins-powered driveline, FAST automated transmission, WABCO safety suite and a driver-focused extended cab, it is engineered to deliver high productivity, lower operating cost and reduced driver fatigue.

💥 At the heart of the tractor is the Cummins M13.560 electronically controlled common-rail diesel. The 12.5-litre six-cylinder engine produces 560hp (407kW) at 1,800rpm and a robust 2,600Nm of torque from 900-1,400rpm. Turbocharging, intercooling and XPI fuel injection give strong low-end pull and efficient highway cruising, while the Holset HE500WG turbo supports responsive performance under load.

Combined with low-drag styling and a lightweight yet rigid chassis, the X6000 560 will take on fellow contenders during the record-breaking Truck Test event in November.

Electric truck. Electric refrigeration. One integrated combination.
For refrigerated transport operators, this is where electrification gets particularly interesting. The truck isn’t only moving the load – it can also provide power for the equipment keeping that load at the required temperature.
We’re seeing some fascinating technology here in Hannover, but this pairing is definitely one to watch.

The vibe on the Volvo Trucks stand at IAA Transportation in Hanover today is incredible.
International Truck of the Year signage is everywhere. And, just in case anyone somehow missed last night’s big announcement, Volvo Trucks staff members are proudly wearing T-shirts celebrating their victory.
And who can blame them?
Last night, Volvo Trucks’ new heavy-duty electric range was crowned 2027 International Truck of the Year.
FOCUS editorial director Charleen Clarke caught up with Roger Alm, president of Volvo Trucks, on the stand today and there was no disguising his delight.
Alm says the award reflects years of innovation, collaboration and determination to make electric transport a practical reality for customers.
The winning range includes the new and improved Volvo FH, FH Aero, FM and FMX Electric, covering applications from regional and long-haul transport to city distribution, construction and utility work.
For Alm, one of the most important aspects of the new generation is that operators should not have to sacrifice productivity to electrify their fleets.
The trucks offer improved payload capability, shorter charging times and, in the case of the long-range FH Aero Electric, a range of up to 700km.
But today is also about celebrating.
Alm was quick to credit the people behind the trucks, with a special word of thanks for Volvo’s engineers, as well as the customers who have supported the company on its electric journey.
Judging by the atmosphere on the stand today, 2027 International Truck of the Year is one victory the Volvo Trucks team intends to enjoy! And rightfully so!

Euro NCAP has released its latest safety ratings for long-haul commercial trucks, coinciding with the opening of IAA Transportation 2026 in Hannover, Germany.

🚚 The tests include a new challenger in the competitive long-haul truck sector, the BYD ETT 44. It is one of the first long-haul electric trucks to be assessed by Euro NCAP, and its results compare well with European diesel models from Mercedes-Benz and Scania. All achieve a five-star safety rating and a CitySafe award.

Tested as a tractor unit with a 4x2 axle configuration, the BYD ETT 44 achieved 89% in Safe Driving, driven by excellent direct vision from its low cab mounting height, lower door vision window, and digital eMirrors which use a camera-based monitoring system (CMS).

🚨 However, Euro NCAP’s testing highlighted areas where BYD’s active safety functions still have room for improvement. With a 73% Crash Avoidance score, performance fell slightly behind leading competitors in relation to frontal vehicle-to-vehicle and lane departure collision prevention, indicating that several driver assistance systems require further refinement.

ZF Friedrichshafen AG has received the title Truck Innovation Award 2027 for its TraXon Hybrid transmission system, recognised by the International Truck of the Year (IToY) jury as the year’s most outstanding innovation in commercial vehicle technology.

⚡️ With TraXon Hybrid, ZF integrates hybrid technology directly into the transmission architecture of heavy commercial vehicles. The system combines ZF’s established expertise in heavy-duty transmissions with its experience in electrified powertrains, providing vehicle manufacturers with an additional route towards reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

🔋 The concept is particularly relevant for markets and transport applications in which the transition to fully electric heavy-duty vehicles is progressing at different speeds in different applications. By integrating an electric drive into the TraXon transmission platform, the system enables manufacturers to incorporate hybrid functionality into conventional driveline architectures while retaining the flexibility required for a broad range of heavy-duty applications.

TraXon Hybrid can support several functions associated with electrified powertrains, including recuperation of braking energy, electric assistance of the combustion engine, and electric driving depending on the respective vehicle configuration and application.

💡 ZF prevailed over four other finalists including BYD’s Flash Charging and Blade Battery 2.0; cellcentric’s BZA375 Fuel Cell; the Level 4 autonomous driving programme from IVECO and PlusAI; and Scania ProDriver.
