Isuzu D-MAX delivers yet again

Isuzu’s D-MAX 3.0 V-Cross 4×2 double cab does not deviate from the model range’s long-standing reputation. FOCUS’s BAREND VAN WYK was impressed by this stylish, sporty, and comfortable bakkie.

The first thing I must say is that I thoroughly enjoyed this vehicle. As promised by Isuzu, it is super comfortable, looks absolutely amazing, and offers great fuel consumption.

From the outside, the seventh generation of the D-MAX range is bolder and sportier than ever. Despite a trim, more athletic appearance accentuated by slimmer, more angular Bi-LED projector headlights, this iteration of the D-MAX is actually more spacious everywhere it counts, and the wheelbase is 30mm longer, optimising the cabin structure.

In the interior, the double cab offers significantly improved comfort levels with leather seats and increased legroom for rear passengers The rear seat positions have been moved outward to increase shoulder room by 20mm, while the driver enjoys a bigger range of seat adjustment. The smaller steering wheel with telescopic adjustment of up to 20mm really contributes to the feeling that you’re driving a car rather than a bulky workhorse.

The new elegant and simple dashboard layout further adds to this sense, with analogue rev counter and speedometer dials alongside a 4.2-inch LCD high resolution multi information display. The nine-inch touchscreen infotainment system features prominently in the centre stack for ease of use, while the double cab’s prime comfort is reinforced by dual-zone climate control with rear vents. The only small gripe I had was with the cupholders between the front seats, which I thought were a bit too deep.

Powered by Isuzu’s upgraded 3.0 Ddi engine, the D-MAX 3.0 V-Cross 4×2 double cab boasts superior pull off and acceleration and is a really quiet drive. The three-litre unit delivers 140kW at 3,600r/min and maximum torque of 450Nm at 1,600 to 2,600r/min, while the six-speed automatic gearbox is smooth and responsive.

The double cab continues the range’s legacy of power, strength and reliability, adding distinctive sporty styling, high levels of comfort, and extensive safety features. The top-of-the-range V-Cross has raised the bar with the Intelligent Driver Assist System (IDAS), including a comprehensive suite of active and passive safety features. I was particularly impressed by the Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Prevention, Lane Departure Warning System, and Lane Keep Assist System.

This sophisticated double cab and its siblings in the D-MAX range look well set to continue Isuzu’s key positioning in the local light commercial vehicle market and be highly competitive in the leisure segment.
