Engen: the progressive energy partner enriching lives

As an Africa-based energy company, Engen’s focus is on the downstream refined petroleum products market and related businesses. The company’s core functions include marketing primary refined petroleum products and providing convenience services via an extensive retail network.

Engen’s products are exported to more than 30 countries – mostly in Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands – and the company has approximately 1 500 service stations in these regions.

Engen offers a wide range of products including diesel (50 ppm & 10 ppm), petrol, Jet A-1, illuminating kerosene, chemicals, and special products. The market segments served by the company include agriculture, mining, construction, fleet, aviation, manufacturing, and marine, amongst others.

Engen’s extensive distribution network – consisting of terminals, storage depots, own transport fleet, and third party partners – is the company’s key competitive advantage, ensuring continuity of supply to all customers and business partners.

The team at Engen understands that fuel consumption typically accounts for up to a quarter of a fleet’s operating costs. As such, any reduction in fuel consumption can significantly impact the bottom line and help grow a business.

Engen’s offering to fleet owners and drivers is based on an in-depth knowledge of the sector, and is tailored to make a tangible difference in the lives of both fleet owners and the truck operators who spend long hours hauling cargo on roads across the African continent.

The transport sector plays a pivotal role in the South African economy; without trucks on our roads, the country stops moving. The trucking and transport sector is therefore a key focus sector for Engen. It is evident that the company is ideally positioned to service this sector with:

A market-leading network

At its market-leading network of service stations and truck stops, Engen caters for truckers’ specific needs. Engen Dynamic Diesel 50 ppm with Pro-Drive is designed based on the driver’s needs – both in today’s driving conditions and in anticipation of future engine technology. Leveraging the knowledge gained from the company’s involvement with the Petronas De Rooy Iveco Dakar Rally Team, the fuel has also been developed by Engen’s fuel experts to deliver a smoother drive, more responsive engine performance, and enhanced fuel efficiency, proven via vehicle testing.

Engen’s most advanced, unique combustion improver technology delivers 2% more power and 4% better acceleration for a smoother drive, making the vehicle more responsive during stop-go and cruising, and when carrying heavy loads. The unique dual detergent for deep cleaning across old and modern diesel engines, meanwhile, extends driving distance by up to 3%. The formulation’s new active ingredient is proven to make your vehicle feel lighter at the touch of the pedal and is a first in Africa with its unique combination of combustion and detergent system technology.

The Engen Diesel Club (EDC) and eFuel Tag system

The EDC and eFuel Tag system provides convenient, cashless refuelling at Engen’s network of truck stops and service stations. This holistic fuel management and control solution is specially designed to make refuelling simpler, more convenient, and more cost-effective.

EDC also offers several other benefits, including credit terms for members, 24/7 operating hours when using the EDC card or the eFuel tag system, cashless payments with price benefits and cost savings, and daily and monthly reports for effective management of fuel spend. In addition to reaping the benefits of Engen’s strategic alliances, EDC customers are also privy to preferential pricing schemes, as well as an extensive nationwide network of service stations, including those of competitors.

An extensive product portfolio that caters for the needs of the modern fleet

It’s comforting to know that should your new vehicle run out of AdBlue, you can now get a top up at Engen. Most modern diesel-powered vehicles built after 2006 use Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology to inject AdBlue into the vehicle’s exhaust gases. When AdBlue combines with exhaust emissions, it breaks down the harmful nitrogen oxides in the diesel exhaust to produce harmless nitrogen and oxygen. AdBlue was a natural fit for the Engen Dynamic Diesel 50ppm and Engen Low SAPS (sulphated ash, phosphorous, and sulphur) Lubricants product offerings.

The demand for AdBlue is now significantly greater than ever before, as more and more Euro 5 and Euro 6 vehicles are operating on South Africa’s roads. Engen AdBlue trades under the name Air1® and is supplied to most major OEMs in SA.

When a vehicle is fitted with an SCR unit, AdBlue is required, but it doesn’t end there. It is important to use Low Sulphur Diesel such as Engen Dynamic Diesel 50ppm and low SAPS lubricants like Petronas Urania 5000 LS. This is crucial, as high sulphur fuel and high SAPS lubricants can affect the efficiency of the SCR unit. Engen was the first petroleum company in South Africa to market AdBlue.

The Annual Engen Driver Wellness initiative

One of Engen’s community support programmes, Engen Driver Wellness aims to improve the occupational health and wellness of long-distance truck drivers. The initiative provides free health screening, advice on healthy lifestyle choices, and consultations for drivers where necessary. This programme is implemented in partnership with Thubelihle Occupational Health & Wellness (TOCH) and involves mobile clinics, which are set up at selected Engen 1Stops & Truck Stops.

The free screenings are conducted by qualified nurses and councillors, including blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, BMI (Body Mass Index), and HIV/AIDS tests. This health, wellness, and road safety initiative is rolled out at 18 Engen Truck Stops/1-Stops to an estimated 3 500 truck drivers, including Engen Depot drivers and forecourt staff. This is another clear example of how Engen cares through its contribution towards reducing road accidents.

Engen is also committed to sustainable business practices, seeking to identify and respond to the financial and societal issues that have a material bearing on the company’s capacity to create value in the communities in which it operates. It is a means towards achieving the company’s Statement of Purpose: “A progressive energy and solutions partner enriching lives for a sustainable future”. Engen remains committed to being a friend of the transport sector, with a focus on supplying superior quality products and tailormade solutions to meet your needs, because “With us you are Number One”.
