Correct storage helps avoid AdBlue-related drawbacks

As demand for cleaner diesel technology increases, condition monitoring specialist WearCheck is highlighting the importance of correct storage and handling of AdBlue, also known as Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF).

WearCheckโ€™s water analysis division โ€“ WearCheck Water โ€“ operates ISO 17025-accredited laboratories that test AdBlue to ensure high-quality control for use in commercial vehicles (CVs). Fleet operators rely on AdBlue in trucks and buses to reduce harmful emissions from diesel engines through selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology.

Nitrogen oxides (NOx), major contributors to air pollution, are subject to strict environmental regulations. Thelma Horsfield, general manager of WearCheck Water, stresses the role of AdBlue in cutting NOx emissions. โ€œHowever,โ€ she notes, โ€œits effectiveness depends heavily on correct storage and handling practices.โ€

She explains that there has been a noticeable increase in warranty claims being rejected by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), with poor AdBlue quality being a potential cause. In some cases, suppliers and wholesalers may not be storing the fluid correctly, leading to contamination from sources such as soil, microbes, oils, and grease.

Storage and handling recommendations

Horsfield shares the following guidelines based on ISO 22241:

  • Store AdBlue between 0 and 30ยฐC to prevent degradation. Its shelf life is 12 months at 30ยฐC, and 18 to 24 months at 25ยฐC or below.
  • Avoid direct sunlight.
  • Use dedicated storage containers made from high-density polyethylene or stainless steel.
  • Keep dispensing systems free from dirt and oil.
  • Ensure storage containers are properly sealed.
  • Never use diesel or oil containers to store or handle AdBlue.
  • Clearly label all AdBlue containers.

Risks of improper storage

Incorrect storage and handling can lead to contamination, which may damage the SCR system, reduce emissions efficiency, and incur high repair costs. Contaminated fluid also poses environmental hazards, further reinforcing the importance of good storage practices.

โ€œWearCheck Water ensures that transport operators have access to reliable AdBlue testing services across Africa,โ€ says Horsfield. โ€œEnsuring proper storage and fluid integrity is not just about maintaining vehicles โ€“ itโ€™s about meeting emissions standards and protecting the environment. We are committed to supporting fleets with accurate analysis and advice on best practices for DEF management.โ€

Horsfield warns that contaminated AdBlue can have serious consequences for a diesel engineโ€™s SCR system. Issues may include clogging of the SCR system, corrosion and component damage, crystallisation and deposits in injectors and pipes, activation of warning lights or limp mode, and higher emissions and legal non-compliance.

What not to do

In summary, Horsfield offers a few clear donโ€™ts:

  • Do not store AdBlue in metal drums, unless made of stainless steel.
  • Do not expose the fluid to extreme heat or freezing temperatures.
  • Do not mix it with water, fuel, or other liquids.
  • Do not reuse diesel- or fuel-handling equipment for AdBlue.

If contamination is suspected, she strongly advises not to use the fluid. It should be tested or replaced to avoid potential damage to the SCR system.

To reduce the risk of purchasing contaminated AdBlue, operators should buy only from suppliers registered with the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) and certified to ISO 22241-1 through ISO 22241-4 standards.

As emission regulations continue to tighten, WearCheck Water remains focused on helping fleet operators meet compliance targets, improve vehicle performance, and reduce environmental impact through stringent testing and expert support.
