Bringing the X-Factor to SA’s CV Market

South Africa has witnessed a groundbreaking addition to the commercial vehicle (CV) scene with the launch of a true game-changer: the all-new D-MAX X-Rider by ISUZU Motors South Africa.

Since its inception in 2016, the X-Rider series has carved out a niche for itself, captivating the South African market with its distinctive design and exceptional features. Integrated into the standard lineup a year later due to its instant popularity, previous iterations of the renowned series have consistently been the top choice for bakkie enthusiasts seeking a vehicle that seamlessly blends capability with style.

Born from the seventh-generation D-MAX range, the latest X-Rider promises to redefine standards for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and bakkie enthusiasts across the nation.

Kevin Fouche, department executive of product planning and programme management at ISUZU Motors South Africa, describes the new D-MAX X-RIDER as a fusion of image, style, and capability. “Designed to turn heads, this model is based on the mid-range 1.9 Ddi LS models. It offers both manual and automatic transmissions in 4×2 form, with an additional 4×4 automatic option for adventurous off-road excursions,” he says.

Eye-Catching Exterior

The allure of the D-MAX X-Rider lies in its assertive exterior design. The sleek black gloss grille adorned with bold red “ISUZU” lettering sets the tone, while X-Rider badges on the front doors and tailgate emphasise its exclusive status. LED headlamps, fog lamps, and taillamps not only enhance the aesthetics but also ensure optimal visibility day and night.

Further enhancing its dynamic appeal are stylish black accents on door handles, B-pillars, side-mirror covers, and the curved sports bar behind the cab. With 18-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels and a standard towbar boasting a 2.1-tonne tow rating, the X-Rider is ready to tackle any task with panache.

The Inner Sanctum

Step inside, and the X-Rider’s unique personality shines through. Subtle red accents throughout the cabin, including red stitching on leather seats and door trims, create a sporty yet refined atmosphere. The “X” logo, prominently featured on the headrests and dashboard, adds a touch of exclusivity, while dark interior surfaces and X-Rider floor mats complete the premium look.

The Power Within

Fuel efficiency stands as a defining trait within the D-MAX lineup, highlighted in particular by ISUZU’s economical
1.9-litre Ddi engine, a cornerstone of the seventh-generation model. This four-cylinder common-rail diesel engine earned notable acclaim earlier this year during ISUZU’s One Tank Challenge, achieving an impressive fuel economy figure of 5.58 litres/100km across 1,452km of diverse terrain. Delivering a maximum power of 110kW at 3,600r/min and peak torque of 350Nm from 1,800 to 2,600r/min, this intercooled turbodiesel unit seamlessly combines efficiency with performance.

The power generated by the 1.9 Ddi engine is seamlessly transmitted to the wheels through two transmission options. The six-speed manual is known for its precision and direct gear shifts, ensuring effortless gear selection; the six-speed automatic is finely tuned for swift gear changes and enhanced fuel efficiency. Customers can opt for either manual or automatic transmissions in the 4×2 version, while the 4×4 model comes equipped with the six-speed automatic as standard.

The performance of the X-Rider aligns perfectly with its rugged aesthetics, maintaining the high standards set by the rest of the current D-MAX range. This includes a maximum wading depth of 800mm, improved underbody protection, enhanced aerodynamics for superior airflow and cooling. In addition, a quick-engaging shift-on-the-fly 4×4 drive system is exclusive to the 4×4 model.

Safety remains a top priority with the X-Rider, which incorporates an impressive array of standard safety features. These include driver and front passenger airbags, front side airbags, curtain airbags, and a driver’s knee airbag. Furthermore, active safety features available to the driver include ABS brakes, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BAS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC) with Traction Control, Hill Start Assist (HSA), Hill Descent Control (HDC), and Trailer Sway Control.

South African Model lineup

The X-Rider range consists of three models. These are all in LS trim grade and are only available in double-cab configuration. The 1.9 Ddi D/Cab HR X-Rider LS features a six-speed manual transmission, while the HR X-Rider LS AT and the 4×4 X-Rider LS AT both come equipped with the six-speed automatic transmission.

All come standard with cruise control, a seven-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, a six-speaker audio system, Wi-Fi compatibility, and a rear USB port. Rear park assist and a rear-view camera are also included as standard features. Check out the pricing here.

The new X-Rider retains its focus on the same target audience as its predecessor: customers wanting a double cab with distinctive looks, heightened refinement, and notable safety and comfort features, as well as unwavering performance and reliability. The development of the all-new D-MAX X-Rider formed part of ISUZU’s substantial R1.2-billion investment in the company’s Struandale operations to produce the seventh-generation D-MAX range.

ISUZU Complete Care

In line with ISUZU’s ongoing commitment to customer satisfaction, every new D-MAX comes standard with the comprehensive ISUZU Complete Care package, including a five-year/120,000-km warranty, roadside assistance, and a five-year unlimited distance anti-corrosion warranty. Additionally, a five-year/90,000-km service plan ensures peace of mind for owners, with the option to extend or upgrade as needed.

The introduction of the all-new D-MAX X-Rider marks a pivotal moment in the South African commercial vehicle landscape. Its seamless fusion of style, performance, and reliability positions it as the ultimate preference for both SMEs and bakkie fanatics.
