Gauteng motorists will receive a last opportunity to provide their inputs and express their concerns with the Aarto Amendment Bill, which primarily seeks to migrate traffic fines completely out of the jurisdiction of the courts and into a purely administrative system. With the rising sun

For 40 years, Isuzu has been producing light commercial vehicles (LCVs) in South Africa. With the announcement by General Motors (GM) that it would completely withdraw from the local market by the end of 2017, this proud heritage – and that of the separate Isuzu Trucks division – came under threat… The brand is, however, now set to enter a new dawn. Isuzu Motors, the Japanese parent company, has taken over 100-percent ownership of the local operations and formed Isuzu […]

Mobile home overload

While not strictly of interest to the readers of FOCUS, Gavin Myers was able to visit the 2018 Caravan, Motor, Touristik (CMT) show in Stuttgart, Germany, with Mercedes-Benz Vans. I could never have imagined just how big the business of caravans and motor homes is in Europe. I was utterly gobsmacked as we trawled through hall after hall, after hall, to see all manner of converted vans, trucks and bespoke mobile homes and caravans for the leisure market. One could, quite […]

The men, the motors, the legend

“I do believe in the horse. The automobile is no more than a transitory phenomenon”, is the quote (attributed to Emperor Wilhelm II of Germany) that greets visitors at the start of the exhibition of the Mercedes-Benz Museum. Could any person at the time have had a more misguided opinion, asks GAVIN MYERS after visiting the mind-blowing Stuttgart exhibition. If there’s one undeniable truth that identifies modern society, it is that its development was vastly accelerated by transportation and, since […]

Thinking digitally about traffic management

How can technology be leveraged to ease traffic congestion? If there’s one thing I hate about commuting, it is the traffic. Commuters in any of our country’s major cities are bound to come up against tailback-causing accidents, out-of-order traffic lights, roadworks, slow-moving vehicles – the list goes on… And so it was with interest that I recently read a piece by Teddy Daka, group CEO of digital solutions provider Ansys, about traffic management of the future entitled “Local solutions to […]

African infrastructure gets support from the UK

The infrastructure backlog afflicting African countries could soon receive some relief from the United Kingdom’s (UK) Department for International Trade (DIT). The World Bank estimates the backlog, in the sub-Saharan region alone, to be about US$93 billion (R1,1 trillion) a year. DIT in Africa has a presence in 21 countries across the continent and can enable the provision of these facilities through UK Export Finance (UKEF), the United Kingdom’s export credit agency, a part of DIT. Loans can be extended […]
