AMFI composites shapes tomorrow’s truck bodies today

Behind the trucks and trailers on our roads lies a complex world of engineering and materials science, crucial to ensuring cargo arrives safely and cost-effectively. COLIN WINDELL reports that AMFI Composites, based in Struandale, Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth), is at the forefront of this innovation.

During the recent Futuroad exhibition in Johannesburg, Vaughn Finkelstein, director of business development at AMFI Composites, explained how the company is shaping the future of transport through lighter, stronger, and more durable materials.

AMFI Composites specialises in the production of Fibre-Reinforced Plastic (FRP) materials that outperform traditional materials like steel, aluminium, and wood. “The evolution of materials replacing traditional options gave us a unique opportunity,” explains Finkelstein. “No one in South Africa was producing fibreglass sheets. We decided to take the leap, import the necessary machinery, and grow from there. Today, we’re not just manufacturing fibreglass sheets – we’re producing our own textiles and blending our own resins in-house.”

This in-house approach allows AMFI to tailor its products to a diverse range of industries. The company’s product range includes Ramtex, used for cladding ISO tankers; Econotex, which offers value-engineered performance at a budget-friendly price; Skytex, which offers translucent FRP roofing solutions; Wovex, a versatile FRP sheeting material; Rhinotex, a premium product for high-performance applications; and Crystex, which offers high performance with a high-gloss finish. All are produced using a state-of-the-art, highly-automated production line.

Transforming transport

In the transport industry, weight is everything. “Reducing the weight of a vehicle while maintaining its structural integrity is key,” says Finkelstein. “Our materials can replace heavier components like steel and aluminium, increasing payload capacity and improving fuel efficiency. Additionally, our FRP materials are resistant to corrosion and wear, which translates to reduced maintenance costs over time.”

For example, AMFI’s Skytex material is a game-changer for tautliner trucks. “Probably around 90% of our transport is on tautliner trucks and we have a solution for this, being Skytex. It’s a translucent roof sheeting product that allows 55% light transmission,” he explains. “This means that during loading and unloading, operators don’t need additional lighting, reducing energy use and improving safety.”

The company’s innovative solutions also extend to fire-retardant technology, which is particularly relevant in construction. “We’ve developed a self-extinguishing composite material aimed at reducing fire risks,” Finkelstein reveals. Additionally, the company has an in-house laboratory that performs UV testing and has created Bioshield, a bacteria-resistant coating designed for truck interiors.

Tailored industry solutions

While transport is a major focus, AMFI’s reach extends to industries like agriculture, construction, and recreational vehicles (RVs). “We’ve developed lightweight sheeting that agricultural clients use for greenhouses and equipment covers,” says Finkelstein. “For RV manufacturers, our products help reduce vehicle weight without compromising on strength or durability.”

This adaptability has positioned AMFI as a leader in composite innovation, both in South Africa and abroad. “Next year, we’re entering the Australian market to supply materials for the RV sector,” he shares. “It’s an exciting step that underscores the global relevance of what we’re doing.”

From humble beginnings to global ambitions

AMFI’s story is one of perseverance and ingenuity. “This all started as a family venture in a garage,” reflects Finkelstein. “Even as we’ve grown, we’ve stayed true to our roots while pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in composite materials.”

The company is one of only seven globally that produce these specialist materials, a fact that highlights its technical expertise and competitive edge. “We’re proud to be putting South African manufacturing on the map,” he says. “It’s proof that innovation doesn’t need to come from big cities or billion-dollar budgets – it comes from vision, hard work, and the willingness to take risks.”

A partnership-driven approach

Collaboration is central to AMFI’s success. “We work closely with our clients to understand their needs and create tailored solutions,” Finkelstein emphasises.

The company’s commitment to its clients is matched by its focus on sustainability. Lighter, more durable materials mean lower fuel consumption and reduced waste, aligning with global trends toward greener transport solutions. “AMFI’s slogan is ‘Lighter and Stronger for Longer’,” elaborates Finkelstein.

Driving the future

Clearly, AMFI Composites is more than a manufacturer – it’s a trailblazer in the field of advanced materials. By delivering innovative, high-performance solutions, the company is not only transforming transport in South Africa, but also making waves on the global stage. As the world moves towards more efficient and sustainable practices, AMFI’s cutting-edge FRP materials are proving indispensable across industries.

“Ultimately, our goal is simple,” Finkelstein concludes. “We want to provide more for less: better performance, reduced costs, and solutions that truly make a difference for our clients. The possibilities are endless and we’re just getting started.”

With its combination of technical expertise, innovative spirit, and customer focus, AMFI Composites is well positioned to lead the next chapter of South African manufacturing on the global stage.
