Scania’s new G460 XT tipper delivers lowest cost per tonne

The fuel price may be lower, but prudent transport operators still need to focus on maximising vehicle efficiency to achieve cost savings. COLIN WINDELL reports that the new Scania G460 XT mining tipper will enable the mines to do exactly that.

Fuel efficiency is a key highlight of Scania’s new G460 XT mining tipper, which was launched at the Electra Mining exhibition held at Nasrec, Johannesburg, at the beginning of September 2024. This heavy-duty vehicle has a rated payload capacity of 40 tonnes and a gross vehicle mass (GVM) of 60 tonnes.

On Scania trucks, the “XT” designation signifies a specific line of models that are designed for demanding and heavy-duty applications, particularly in challenging environments like construction and mining. The “XT” stands for “Extreme Tough” or “Extreme Terrain”, reflecting the truck’s enhanced durability and robustness.

According to Vinesh Kalu, segment manager for mining at Scania South Africa, today’s mine operators face unprecedented challenges, including the need to cut emissions and meet efficiency demands or risk becoming obsolete. “The new G460 XT mining tipper engine delivers high torque output along with outstanding fuel efficiency. The robust Scania Opticruise gearbox ensures smooth, automated gear changes, reducing driver fatigue, and the high air intake system is specifically designed for dusty and harsh environments, providing the engine with the cleanest possible air,” he says.

The new tipper is equipped with a heavy-duty suspension, shock absorbers, and anti-roll bars to enhance stability, while the Scania retarder improves braking performance and reduces wear on the wheel brakes, particularly on downhill slopes. “The Scania cab meets Swedish crash test standards, which are among the strictest in the world. It offers exceptional crash performance, including high structural integrity, optimal instrument positioning, and effective dispersion of impact forces,” adds Kalu.

The vehicle’s safety features are comprehensive: “The braking system includes ABS and hill-hold features, while the cab interior is equipped with driver and side curtain airbags. The tipper also has a cab protector overhang and a 360-degree camera system, ensuring visibility in all directions,” Kalu expands.

Operational efficiency is not limited to the vehicle itself. The G460 XT includes a driver support tool that provides real-time feedback on the dashboard, showing how driver behaviour impacts fuel consumption and road safety. “This data is also transmitted to a central system, where Scania uses data-driven service tools – from fleet management and report monitoring to driver training – to help businesses become smarter,” hr explains.

The new tipper is assembled at Scania’s facility in Johannesburg, allowing final specifications to be tailored to meet client requirements and operating conditions. After-sales support includes flexible options such as “maintenance only” or “full repair and maintenance” packages, with the option for on-site servicing.

According to Vinesh Kalu, segment manager for mining at Scania South Africa, the new G460 XT mining tipper engine delivers high torque output along with outstanding fuel efficiency.

“With world-leading fuel economy and improved payload efficiency, the G460 XT offers lower cost per tonne, positively impacting margins and the bottom line,” says Kalu. “Scania’s aim is to drive the shift towards a sustainable transport system that benefits businesses, society, and the environment. We are focusing on energy efficiency, alternative fuels, electrification, and smart, safe transport to achieve sustainable solutions.”

He notes that a volatile market and fluctuating commodity prices have contributed to a downturn in mining production. However, he believes the new G460 XT is well-positioned to seize opportunities in the mining sector. “I see a bright future for this tipper, particularly as mine operations are changing. Haul routes are becoming longer as more material is mined farther from crushing or processing plants,” he elaborates.

“This is where the G460 XT excels, because it can significantly improve productivity and fuel efficiency over these extended distances. The data collected from our demo field trials demonstrates this vehicle’s viability,” he continues. “Our sales strategy involves offering a demo field trial, collecting data, and conducting a cost analysis to show potential buyers how their cost per tonne can be reduced.”

Kalu also highlights the growing trend of digitalisation on mines: “Features like report monitoring, driver behaviour monitoring, and payload monitoring provide real-time data at the touch of a button on a fleet owner’s cell phone or in a control room, enhancing the ability to monitor truck performance.”

The company is also seeing a strong focus on improving driver behaviour, safety, and health checks. “One of the standout features of the G460 XT is its 360-degree camera system. A driver-facing camera monitors fatigue levels and alerts supervisors when intervention is needed, ensuring drivers take necessary breaks,” notes Kalu.

The G-series gearbox used in the tipper is also notable for being much lighter and quieter than previous versions, complying with current and future noise regulations in European and other markets. The weight reduction is achieved through the use of all-aluminium housings.

“It’s essentially about metallurgy,” explains Mats Henriksson, development engineer at Scania R&D. “We use advanced steel qualities and apply technologies such as cog polishing and shot peening to increase the hardening and durability of key components.”

In closing, Kalu says Scania’s new G460 XT mining tipper represents a significant advancement in mining transport technology. “With its exceptional fuel efficiency, robust build, advanced safety features, and innovative driver support, the G460 XT is designed to meet the demanding needs of modern mining operations,” he expands. “As the industry continues to evolve, Scania’s latest offering ensures that fleet owners are equipped with a vehicle that not only enhances productivity, but also supports a sustainable future.”
