Is it time to armour-plate your bakkie?

Is it time to armour-plate your bakkie?

The recent wave of violence in South Africa has made us more security conscious than ever before. Bearing this in mind, we asked SVI Engineering, a specialist manufacturer of armoured products, what it would cost to armour-plate a bakkie.

These are the costs for the B6 Stopgun V2.0 armouring solution:

Single Cab: From R223 000

Extended Cab: From R258 000

Double Cab: From R319 000

All prices exclude VAT.

The solution is designed to protect the occupants against assault rifles such as the AK47 and R1. It includes integrated door armour, including flat armoured glass fitted in the window frames, with the option of gunports. A spokesman for SVI tells FOCUS that this elegant solution provides similar ballistic protection but reduces the personal injury risk considerably when compared with the traditional double-door system.

A first for this armouring segment is a fully functional curtain airbag (when standard on the bakkie) to complement the vehicle’s other standard safety systems. A single kit takes around four weeks to prepare, and installation takes three weeks.
