GAVIN MYERS goes face to face with the new vice president of Volvo Group Southern Africa, Marcus Hörberg You’ve been with Volvo for more than two decades now. What is your background and what is it about the company that’s kept you “in the family”? I grew up in the Swedish countryside, in the town of Andersdorp and, really, I had no life before Volvo… When I moved to Gothenburg and began working at the company, I planned to stay […]

An article on the BizCommunity website explains how the City of Cape Town recently conducted a comprehensive review of the MyCiTi bus service. This resulted in the introduction of new routes to new destinations, as well as more direct routes with fewer transfers. Councillor Brett Herron, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Transport and Urban Development, said: “Our transport planners recently conducted a review of the MyCiTi service and the passenger demand on the MyCiTi routes. On September 20 a convoy of two Haval H9s, two Haval H6Cs, a Haval H2 and the GWM Steed 5E bakkie set off on the 2018 Haval Outreach Expedition that culminated in Cape Town on October 3. “South Africa is a SUV and bakkie-oriented market, so we set off to prove that the GWM Steed can handle even the toughest local roads. In this three-part series, we discuss considerations pertinent to the movement of freight in a road-to-rail system Like several African countries, Zambia is serviced by main railway lines with few “branch” lines connecting the mining and manufacturing industries. The country’s new Railways (Transportation of Heavy Goods) Regulations compel heavy goods transporters to move 30 percent of bulk cargo from road to rail. There is a growing call for other nations to follow suit. The legislation has not been without its […]
I recently discovered the fascinating past of South African rail… Colour me ignorant, but I had no idea there was a transport museum in the historical town of George, in the Western Cape. So, imagine my surprise when I came across it while taking some rest and recreation time in the area. I was, I’ll admit, a little disappointed when I realised it was a Transnet Transport Museum (one of two in the country, apparently; the other in Kimberley). While […]
The Competition Commission is proposing a new, voluntary Automotive Code of Conduct, which the National Automobile Dealers’ Association (NADA) believes will be catastrophic to the vehicle industry. The Code proposes that vehicle owners can have their vehicles serviced at any workshop without breaching their warranty. The initial reasoning behind the Code was to offer consumers more competitive prices. However, NADA points out that there are many other factors of the Code that cause harm to consumers and other road users. […]

On Wednesday October 3, the price of diesel rose by 8,6 percent – from R14,40 to R15,64 per litre. The Southern African Bus Operators Association (Saboa) notes that this and other rising costs such as wage increases and industrial strikes, together with low annual subsidy increases, will put the industry under immense cost pressure. The overall increase in the cost of fuel since September 2017 (R11,71 per litre inland wholesale), year on year, amounts to 34 percent. In tandem, the […]
