A Tesla Cybertruck for Cops? Only in SA’s dreams!
A Tesla Cybertruck for Cops? Only in SA’s dreams!
The end of the year is nigh! So, I’ve decided to have a bit of fun with my editor’s column this month. I am going to tell you about the goings on in the city of Irvine, California, where they have done something rather remarkable – and I must admit, a little enviable. They’ve just deployed the first-ever Tesla Cybertruck as a fully outfitted police vehicle. Yes, you read that right. While here in South Africa, we hope that our cops have fully functional vehicles, the folks over in Irvine are living the dream.
Let me tell you about this beast of a police vehicle. It’s not just any Cybertruck; this one has been specially modified by UP.FIT, a division of a company called Unplugged Performance, to meet the demands of law enforcement. The Cybertruck, already famous for its utterly bonkers bulletproof, stainless steel exoskeleton and sci-fi movie looks, has been transformed into a next-gen patrol vehicle designed to handle the tough realities of police work. And get this: it’s being used for the Irvine Police Department’s Drug Abuse Resistance Education programme, which targets elementary school students and is aimed at “preventing the use of controlled substances, membership in gangs, and violent behaviour”. Imagine rocking up at a school in this Cybertruck!
Irvine has long been known as a hub for electric vehicle (EV) innovation. With a high rate of EV adoption and one of the busiest Tesla delivery centres in the world, it’s no surprise that the city jumped at the chance to integrate one of Elon’s vehicles into its law enforcement fleet.
Built for modern policing
The modifications done by UP.FIT are somewhat impressive. This is not just a flashy showpiece; it’s been purpose-built to make police work more efficient and safer. The Cybertruck comes with some serious police tech, including a roof-mounted Whelen lighting system and integrated rocker panel lighting for maximum visibility. Need to light up a scene during a night patrol? No problem – there’s a remote-operated spotlight system that can do just that. It’s basically a mobile lighting rig on wheels.
Inside the cabin, UP.FIT has thought of everything a police officer might need. There’s a specially designed electrical system that supports critical patrol equipment like a mobile data computer, police radios, and public address systems. Even better, the wiring has been done so cleanly that there’s still room for important tools like a rifle mount under the rear seats. Efficient and practical – what more could you want?
But it’s the features that Tesla built into the Cybertruck that really set this vehicle apart. The ballistic-grade stainless steel? Perfect for keeping officers safe in dicey situations. And let’s not forget the bio-weapon defence mode and HEPA filtration – ideal for those “just in case” moments. While our police here in South Africa could only dream of such protective features, Irvine’s finest are out there breathing clean air while their vehicles protect them from harm.
The future of law enforcement vehicles
Now, I know what you’re thinking: this sounds like something from a futuristic film. But in Irvine, this is reality. According to Ben Schaffer, CEO of Unplugged Performance, this Cybertruck represents the future of law enforcement vehicles. He’s thrilled about the collaboration, and who wouldn’t be? The Cybertruck not only brings sustainability into the spotlight with its electric powertrain, but it’s also setting new standards for police fleet capabilities.
The collaboration to bring this vehicle to life wasn’t a small task either. It involved the combined efforts of UP.FIT, the Irvine Police Department’s technology division, their maintenance team, and Tesla itself. It’s the kind of project that pays attention to detail, ensuring that every aspect of the Cybertruck has been tailored to meet the needs of the officers who will be using it. They’ve thought of everything, from safety and comfort to practicality and technology.
South Africa, here we come?
Now, wouldn’t it be amazing if the South African Police Service (SAPS) could roll out vehicles like this? I can already picture it: futuristic Cybertrucks patrolling our highways, fitted with all the latest tech, offering both safety and sustainability. And aspiring cops banging down the doors of police stations, desperately trying to land a job…
Of course, this is a pipe dream; it’s not going to happen in my lifetime. Goodness gracious me, in South Africa we would settle simply for cops who actually do their jobs – we don’t really care what they drive. Nevertheless, the Irvine Police Department’s Cybertruck has offered us a glimpse of what is possible when cutting-edge technology and law enforcement meet. So, I’ll tip my hat to Irvine and UP.FIT for showing us the future of policing. It looks good!
