AI takes the wheel
AI takes the wheel
The South African trucking industry has long grappled with persistent challenges like high operational costs, driver shortages, and unpredictable road conditions. However, artificial intelligence (AI) is stepping up to redefine how fleet management operates – promising safer roads, more efficient operations, and a data-driven approach to decision-making.
AI has emerged as a game-changer for fleet management. Traditional tools like GPS and basic telematics, though useful, have limited functionality, lacking the sophistication to contextualise driver behaviour or accurately predict potential risks. AI-driven systems, such as Netradyne’s Driver•i platform, fill this gap by offering real-time, vision-based insights that boost safety and efficiency.
A survey conducted in December by Netradyne at the Gartner Supply Chain Planning Summit in Denver, Colorado, highlighted AI’s untapped potential. While only 33% of supply chain professionals currently use AI for fleet safety, a staggering 81% plan to adopt such platforms within the next year. This shift reflects growing recognition of AI’s ability to improve visibility, monitor driver behaviour, and reduce accidents.
“Transportation is an inherently tough business. With more people on the road and unpredictable conditions, there is more risk for logistics providers than ever,” explains Durgadutt Nedungadi, senior vice president for international business at Netradyne. “Vision-based AI technologies can help alleviate many of these challenges by delivering real-time insights that boost safety, predict potential issues, and ensure timely interventions.”
Driver safety reimagined
One of AI’s standout features is its ability to analyse 100% of driving time and distinguish between safe and risky behaviours. Unlike traditional systems that rely on simplistic triggers like speed thresholds, AI contextualises actions within road conditions and surrounding environments.
This nuanced approach enables fleet managers to adopt positive recognition strategies. Drivers who exhibit exemplary behaviour are rewarded, creating a culture of motivation and continuous improvement. “Industry research shows that drivers respond better to positive reinforcement and constructive feedback than punitive measures,” adds Nedungadi.
This shift not only improves safety records but also addresses a pressing concern in fleet management: driver retention. With the global driver shortage worsening (in 2024, the American Trucking Association said the shortage in the US would exceed 82,000 by the end of the year), keeping drivers motivated has never been more critical.
Operational efficiency through data
Another advantage of AI lies in its ability to streamline operations. The Driver•i platform integrates AI, Internet of Things (IoT), and cloud computing into a single system, offering centralised access to vast amounts of data. This capability is crucial for fleet managers overwhelmed by disparate data sources from telematics, GPS, and other tools.
“AI-driven solutions like Driver•i not only enhance visibility but also provide actionable insights, enabling managers to identify patterns and take proactive measures,” says Nedungadi. By leveraging predictive maintenance and real-time traffic analysis, fleets can reduce downtime, optimise routes, and minimise operational costs.
Looking ahead
As the adoption of AI accelerates, it is clear that these systems will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of fleet management. For South Africa’s logistics industry – where cost pressures and safety concerns are ever-present – AI offers a beacon of hope.
While challenges such as the need for skilled technicians and concerns about driver privacy remain, AI’s benefits far outweigh its limitations. As Nedungadi points out, “Supply chain leaders are increasingly turning to AI-driven data analysis to boost operational efficiency, improve safety, and maintain a competitive edge.”
