A diverse pathway to success
In collaboration with UD Trucks Southern Africa (UDTSA), Girl Power celebrates women thriving in SA’s transport and logistics industry. This month, we shine a spotlight on Liza-Marie Brooks, the dealer principal at UDTSA’s BB Trucks Pretoria dealership. With two decades of industry experience, including eight years in her current role, Liza-Marie joins ROWAN WATT-PRINGLE to discuss a career path that should inspire women entering the industry.
What motivated you to pursue a career in the trucking industry, and with UD Trucks?
I’ve always been fascinated by the industry’s complex operations and its impact on the economy. My mother was in the industry and funnily enough, my childhood best friend’s father had a transport business. We used to play in the trucks, never thinking I would end up in truck sales!
My professional journey began with UD Trucks, and – over the years with the company – I have been provided with invaluable training and skills. My career path has been diverse: I began as a PA, transitioning to administration, sales, and then sales management. Working in so many different positions has moulded me into the professional I am today.
While in sales, I joined UDTSA’s cadet programme. So, UD Trucks essentially laid the foundation for me in the industry, giving me a deep understanding of the business and allowing me to confidently engage with various aspects of the trucking sector and excel in my role.
Was this a job you always wanted to do, and are there specific challenges?
Although becoming a dealer principal wasn’t my original aspiration, my path unexpectedly led me to this opportunity, for which I’m immensely thankful. I may not have considered it a goal when starting out, but taking on this role was really exciting, and it felt like I’d accomplished something significant after years of hard work and dedication.
Navigating the rapidly changing landscape of our industry and the market demands is a key challenge, so I aim to promote adaptability and continuous learning within my team, while forming strategic partnerships for a competitive edge.
What are your long-term aspirations?
To grow further in a role where I can create avenues to provide others the same opportunities that have shaped my journey. My ambition extends beyond personal success; it’s rooted in a desire to empower people and lead by example to inspire women within the industry.
Is it difficult for women to rise to management positions in the industry, and do you have any advice to share?
While there have been challenges, my focus has always been on improving my skills and capabilities, rather than on my gender. I believe in working hard and proving myself through dedication and results.
Nevertheless, to overcome gender stereotypes and build strong professional relationships regardless of gender, it is crucial to create an inclusive work environment based on skills and contributions, through mutual respect and equal opportunities. It’s important to address gender-based challenges with open communication to reach an agreeable resolution.
My advice to women in the industry is to be open-minded, stand up for themselves, and never compromise on their worth or shy away from a challenge. It’s a rewarding industry with vast opportunities for growth, learning, meeting interesting people, and having invaluable experiences. To that end, I strive to create a supportive environment where women feel encouraged to fearlessly pursue their ambitions.
