The IAA Transportation takes place in Germany next month. CHARLEEN CLARKE says that visitors will be able to see, experience, and learn all about some incredible products, services, and technologies.
Every two years, the captains of the transport industry pack their bags and head to Hannover, Germany, for the IAA, which was renamed the IAA Transportation two years ago. This year, it takes place from 17 to 22 September, and over 1,500 exhibitors will show visitors their products, innovations, and services.
We travelled to Frankfurt, Germany, for the International Press Workshop that takes place before each IAA. During this event, senior representatives from leading transport companies comment on global developments and tell the media what they will be showing at the fair. We also attended a number of pre-IAA press conferences to gain insight into the exhibits. Here are some of the highlights of the 2024 IAA Transportation (we’ve listed exhibitors alphabetically):
Allison Transmission
US transmission manufacturer Allison Transmission will be unveiling the latest model in its eGen Power electric axle family for commercial vehicles (CVs) at the IAA. With the introduction of the new eGen Power 85S model, Allison expands its line of fully electric axles. This new axle is specifically designed for use in battery-electric, fuel cell-electric, and hybrid CVs. The eGen Power 85S features a powerful electric motor and a two-speed transmission, delivering a continuous power output of 225kW and peak power of 325kW.
Allison Transmission’s eGen Power axles replace the conventional driveline in CVs, offering significant space savings for the battery. Designed as a “drop-in” solution, the axle can be easily integrated into existing vehicle chassis, simplifying the retrofit process and reducing development costs. The eGen Power 85S has already attracted early adopters; it has been integrated into Anadolu Isuzu’s fully electric Novo Volt midibus platform and is already in use in light refuse and distribution vehicles.
AZuR
AZuR will present its solutions and the benefits of retreaded branded tyres for CVs. According to a study conducted with the Fraunhofer Institute UMSICHT, retreaded tyres save over 60% in CO2 emissions compared to new tyres. Each retreaded truck tyre generates around 135kg less CO2 emissions, requires two-thirds fewer raw materials, and consumes 50% less energy.
Bosch
Bosch will be showcasing a broad array of hardware and software solutions, ranging from electric drives and fuel cell systems to advanced driver assistance systems. The company plans to introduce its eAxle, designed for integration into CVs up to 7.5 tonnes. Alongside this, Bosch will present a fuel cell system as a complementary solution to battery-electric trucks. Bosch is already mass-producing a 200kW fuel cell system and is working on the new Fuel Cell Power Module Compact 300, which will be even more compact and powerful to meet growing demands. In addition to these complete solutions, Bosch will also offer individual system components and submodules, including components for hydrogen storage systems and hydrogen engines.
Another key focus for Bosch is vehicle connectivity and the use of digital services. Bosch will also display its product portfolio of fully electric and electro-hydraulic steering systems, specifically designed for heavy commercial vehicles (HCVs). These systems, like the Servotwin and the EPSapa highload, are designed not only to provide improved steering support but also to offer functions for automated driving.
In Hannover, Bosch will also showcase the third generation of its multifunction camera for HCVs, which combines traditional image processing algorithms with artificial intelligence (AI). Additionally, Bosch will introduce the fifth generation of its front and side radar systems, which enhance safety through reliable object detection in the front and side vehicle environments.
BPW
BPW is unveiling its latest chassis generation, iC Plus. This innovative chassis solution comes standard with telematics from idem telematics and leverages AI to optimise the transport process. With this technology, vehicle operators can enhance utilisation, analyse brake performance, and more efficiently manage the entire transport process, including driver, fleet, and maintenance management.
Additionally, BPW is showcasing the ePower generator axle. Its energy recovery system is designed to capture energy during the driving and braking of the trailer, which can then be used to power electric or hybrid refrigeration units. Depending on usage and mileage, this system could save up to 4,000 litres of diesel and reduce CO2 emissions by 10 tonnes per trailer annually. Another solution for reducing diesel consumption will be presented by BPW subsidiary Hesterberg. Its aerodynamic solution for trailers is designed to reduce the diesel consumption of the towing vehicle by up to 0.4 litres/100km with minimal effort.
Continental
Continental will showcase its latest innovations under the theme “Innovating Transportation from Road to Cloud”. The goal is to make transportation safer, more connected, and more autonomous. Continental will present a wide range of solutions, from tyres and driver assistance systems to advanced vehicle connectivity. This will include state-of-the-art high-performance computers (HPCs) and software, as well as a complete ecosystem that extends from the road to the cloud, enabling software-defined vehicles (SDVs) and autonomous driving functions.
A highlight will be a HPC for the CV cockpit and a cross-domain zone control unit that integrates power supply for cockpit and ADAS components. Additionally, Continental will introduce its Automotive Edge Framework CAEdge, a cloud-based development environment designed to facilitate efficient, secure, and rapid development and testing of vehicle software. It will also showcase intelligent services that utilise real-time data for increased process automation and efficiency, including two new versions of the ContiConnect digital tyre management solution.
The company will demonstrate how its expertise in materials supports the transport industry in reducing environmental impact, such as with the Tough RuNR air springs. It will also present innovative technological solutions for new energy vehicles (NEVs), like thermal management for battery-electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles.
Continental will also provide in-depth insights into its collaboration with Aurora in developing and producing a large-scale Level Four autonomous driving system. Additionally, two intelligent global tachograph solutions will be introduced, designed to enhance safety and help enforce EU mobility package regulations while providing secure and reliable data services: the intelligent tachograph (V2) DTCO 4.1 and a plug-and-play solution. Visitors will also have the chance to experience a new truck tyre that combines the best energy efficiency on the market with excellent braking performance.
Cummins
Cummins will showcase its latest Euro 7-compliant solutions. The focus is on powertrain systems designed to meet the stringent requirements of the upcoming Euro 7 and EU CO2 regulations.
Among the highlights will be the X10 engine, which is already prepared to meet Euro 7 standards. This engine is equipped with an advanced exhaust aftertreatment system that significantly reduces emissions while enhancing the engine’s performance and efficiency. Additionally, Cummins will present the X15H hydrogen combustion engine, offering a zero-CO₂ alternative to traditional diesel engines.
These products will be displayed alongside the latest exhaust aftertreatment systems, an Eaton-Cummins transmission, as well as the Meritor MIS-10 front independent suspension, the 17X HE rear axle, and the ELSA 225 H disc brakes.
Daimler Truck
In addition to showing numerous vehicles at the IAA Transportation, Daimler Truck will launch TruckCharge. This new brand will consolidate all its existing and future offerings related to electric infrastructure and charging of electric trucks – including consulting, hardware, and digital services. TruckCharge is designed for truck fleet operators and industrial companies with owned or third party-operated truck fleets.
The services offered by TruckCharge are brand-agnostic and aim to provide a comprehensive solution, from energy production to vehicle operation. The consultancy services include support in planning, establishing, and designing the charging infrastructure and network connection.
Fliegl Trailer
Fliegl Trailer will be emphasising lightweight construction to enhance efficiency and sustainability in the transport sector. The company is showcasing a range of vehicles that stand out for their low weight and high payload capacity. Highlights include the Tandem Swap Body Trailer TWP 180 and the Three-Axle Container Semi-Trailer SDS 380, both of which are designed to impress with their low tare weight and high payload.
Another key feature is the Vario V3+ container chassis, which offers flexibility thanks to its front and rear extensions as well as middle telescoping capabilities. This chassis is designed to accommodate containers of various sizes, providing high flexibility for everyday logistics operations. Fliegl will also show a three-axle curtain-sided semi-trailer, demonstrating how a vehicle can be equipped to enhance functionality and convenience.
Iveco
Iveco’s exhibit will feature a fleet representative of its extensive line-up of vehicles powered by biodiesel, bio-methane, battery-electric, and hydrogen propulsions. The company will also unveil two brand-new zero-emission vehicles making their global premiere at IAA:
- A new electric light commercial vehicle (LCV) developed with Hyundai, with which Iveco will debut in the upper part of the mid segment up to 3.5t.
- The heavy-duty Iveco S-eWay rigid: a versatile and flexible zero-emission solution to suit all urban and regional requirements.
The internal area will showcase the company’s latest advanced mobility solutions, integrated with a wide array of digital and financial services. These have been developed by Iveco to embrace the journey towards zero emissions, addressing changing market demands and meeting stringent decarbonisation targets.
In its 1,000-m2 external area, Iveco will display more than 20 vehicles developed in collaboration with the company’s trusted network of bodybuilders. In the test drive area, it will offer visitors the opportunity to experience a fleet of 13 vehicles first hand, comprising light, medium, and heavy trucks including the debuting battery-electric vehicles and the new-generation Iveco S-Way featuring PlusDrive autonomous driving technology.
Kia
Kia will lift the lid on its new Platform Beyond Vehicle (PBV) at the IAA. It’s the first time that the Korean company is exhibiting at the fair and the PBV is sure to attract considerable attention. Kia PBVs are total mobility solutions that combine fit-for-purpose electric vehicles (EVs) with advanced software solutions based on the Hyundai Motor Group’s software-to-everything (or SDx) strategy.
Phase one of the PBV launch programme will see the introduction of the Kia PV5, a versatile EV optimised for major domains such as hailing, delivery, and utilities, which features conversion capability for diverse customer needs. Enhanced data connectivity between vehicles and external data such as route or delivery information will enable convenient operation of multiple vehicles as a software-defined fleet. This emergence of customised business fleets and PBV-specific solutions means less downtime and enhanced cost-effectiveness. Phase two will see the completion of the dedicated PBV model line-up.
Knorr-Bremse
The centrepiece of Knorr-Bremse’s stand will be a display where visitors can explore the company’s solutions through exhibits and multimedia product journeys. The company is adopting a sustainable booth concept, featuring high-quality containers that will be reused for future exhibitions.
Knorr-Bremse plans to continue using the exhibits and digital content after the IAA as part of a truck roadshow, bringing them directly to select customers. A constant emphasis on traffic safety will be present, with the company showcasing the latest developments in braking systems, driver assistance systems, steering, air supply and air treatment systems, and innovative trailer solutions.
Mahle
Mahle will also present a wide range of technologies aimed at decarbonising the transport sector. For the first time, Mahle will showcase a heavy-duty eAxle that integrates two electric motors with a total output of 520kW and a complete liquid management system.
Mahle engineers have combined the eAxle, battery cooling, and fuel cell peripherals with a fully functional fuel cell, to present a technology demonstrator in Hannover. This demonstrator aims to show how Mahle integrates its technologies – including thermal management – into EVs to develop and optimise various options for different customer applications.
Another component of the tech demonstrator is a new evaporative cooling system, making its world debut at the IAA. According to the company, this system is designed to keep the fuel cell at an optimal temperature and provides up to 50kW more cooling power within the given installation space. This innovation is expected to reduce the required fan power and decrease hydrogen consumption by up to 1.5%.
MAN Truck & Bus
MAN Truck & Bus will show a comprehensive range of vehicles – from vans to trucks to buses and coaches. Its battery-electric and hydrogen combustion vehicles will no doubt attract considerable attention. Turn to page 60 to read our special feature on the company’s stand.
Maxion Wheels
Maxion Wheels will be unveiling its latest developments in truck wheels at the IAA. The company specialises in designing lightweight yet durable wheels that enhance both performance and efficiency in CVs. One of the highlights at the company’s booth will be a new line of wheels specifically engineered for heavy-duty vehicles. These wheels feature optimised weight distribution, leading to improved fuel efficiency and a reduction in CO₂ emissions. Additionally, the wheels offer increased durability, which helps lower overall operating costs and extends the lifespan of vehicles.
Maxion Wheels will also introduce its latest innovations in aluminium wheels, known for their lightness and strength. These wheels not only help reduce vehicle weight but also improve driving performance and safety.
Michelin
Michelin will reveal how fleet operators can manage some of the issues that the transport and logistics industry is facing, such as rising costs, staff shortages, legal requirements, and the climate crisis. The company will also present a comprehensive solution for holistic fleet management on its stand B26 in Hall 19/20. This will combine its high-tech tyres, tyre management, predictive maintenance, and networked fleet management.
Quantron
Quantron will display its hydrogen fuel cell trucks for both light- and heavy-duty use. These vehicles offer a high range and short refuelling times, making them an attractive option for zero-emission freight transport. Quantron is working with global partners to achieve cost parity with traditional diesel trucks and promote adoption of fuel cell technology. These new models aim to promote decarbonisation of the transport sector and reduce operating costs in the long run. The company is a relatively new player within the CV market, but reports that it has already delivered more than 200 zero-emission CVs.
Scania
Scania has not been specific about its exhibit; all we know is that the company will be presenting various innovative models and new developments – including a world premiere. The theme of its stand this year is “Future Energy Hub”, so we expect to see lots of zero-emission products on its stand. The company will offer test drives, both on the exhibition grounds and on public roads. Interested parties can book their appointment at the Scania registration counter in Hall 12 Stand C60.
Schmitz Cargobull
For the IAA, Schmitz Cargobull is applying the motto “Delivering Performance” to showcase efficient transport solutions that customers can use to improve their fleet’s performance and optimise overall operating costs. Just one is its S.BO PACE lightweight dry freight semi-trailer, which will be revealed with an aerodynamically modified EcoFIX body.
The S.BO PACE isn’t new; it was launched at the end of 2021. Featuring a fully modular design, the dry freight semi-trailer features a body made from innovative and sturdy Struktoplast panels. Thanks to the light, honeycomb-shaped panels, each S.BO PACE trailer weighs around 700kg less than comparable vehicles in this segment. The payload is higher, while fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions are reduced.
Now, with the EcoFIX body, an aerodynamic variant is available. The body’s aerodynamic shape reduces wind resistance by about 3.5%, resulting in additional fuel consumption savings and reduced CO₂ emissions. The S.BO PACE can be equipped with a number of load-securing components to protect cargo, such as package safety tarpaulins or lashing belts. The floor load-bearing capacity is 5.4t as standard, with the option to increase this to 7.1 or 8t for transporting heavier loads.
Valeo
Valeo will unveil a wide range of new products, including 48-V hybrid systems for delivery vans and compact CVs, particularly suitable for last-mile delivery. Another highlight is the Cyclee technology for e-bikes, which includes a 48-V electric motor, an automatic transmission, and predictive software. This technology is particularly suited for e-cargo bikes or tricycles.
Valeo will also present the FlexHeater, an intelligent heating system for electric CVs that uses interior surfaces to provide additional comfort with minimal energy consumption. Valeo’s battery thermal regulation and heat pump thermal management technologies will also be showcased. Additionally, Valeo will present safety technologies like Aquablade, which cleans the windshield to ensure constant visibility and improves the driver’s reaction time by 315 milliseconds. The Driver Monitoring System (DMS), integrated into the B-pillar of transport vehicles, is designed to prevent driver drowsiness or distraction. Scala-3-LiDAR, the world’s first mass-produced 3D laser scanner, is already in use in vehicles on the market. Furthermore, Valeo is developing lighting technologies for trucks to enhance safety with adaptive high beams and HD road projection.
Volvo Trucks
Volvo Trucks will present an extensive global product lineup in Hannover. One highlight is the new Volvo FH Aero series – recently launched for Europe, Asia, and Africa – which includes variants powered by electricity and biofuels. In the US market, the brand-new Volvo VNL has been introduced, built on an entirely new platform featuring groundbreaking autonomous technologies. The IAA will be the first opportunity to experience the Volvo VNL in Europe. According to the company, the development of both truck models focused on fuel efficiency and safety.
Other models on display will include the Volvo FM Low Entry, equipped exclusively with a battery-electric powertrain, and the Volvo FH16 Aero, featuring a highly efficient 17-litre engine. Volvo Trucks will also showcase its upcoming eAxle technology, which provides greater electric range and optimised driving performance.
Additionally, it will present its advanced driver assistance systems, including the new Camera Monitor System (CMS), which enhances both aerodynamics and safety by improving visibility.
Overall, eight different Volvo Trucks models will be showcased, including the Volvo FH Aero Electric 4×2 with CMS; Volvo FH16 Aero 4×2 with HVO fuel, XXL cab, and CMS; Volvo FMX Electric 6×4 with a three-way tipper; Volvo FM Low Entry 6×2 with a skip loader; Volvo FM Gas Powered 4×2 with CMS; Volvo FE Electric 4×2 with a skip loader, Volvo VNL 860, fully equipped; and a Volvo fuel cell test truck.
This is only a taste of things to come when the IAA opens its doors next month – there will be a whole host of other fascinating innovations and products to see and experience at this year’s fair!
Awards galore at IAA
Various prestigious awards will be presented on 16 September during the press day of IAA Transportation 2024.
The award ceremony will include the International Bus of the Year, International Van of the Year, International Truck of the Year, Truck Innovation, and International Trailer Awards. These awards recognise outstanding achievements and innovations in the transport and logistics industry.
Jürgen Mindel, managing director of the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), says the association is honoured to present these esteemed awards at IAA Transportation. “As the leading global platform for the commercial vehicle industry, IAA Transportation is the perfect place to experience innovations shaping the future. The growing number of exhibitors and the increasing internationalisation of the IAA reflect the commitment and innovative strength of the entire industry,” he notes.
Gianenrico Griffini, president of the International Truck of the Year jury, adds: “IAA Transportation provides a unique opportunity to present the latest developments in the truck industry, such as alternative propulsion, energy transition, and technical innovation. Our awards, the International Truck of the Year and the Truck Innovation Award, are designed to honour excellence in these key areas.”
Jarlath Sweeney, president of the International Van of the Year jury, concurs. “All members of the International Van of the Year jury are looking forward to the announcement and presentation of the 2025 International Van of the Year trophy during the IAA Transportation ’Stars of the Year’ event at Messe Hannover,” says Sweeney. “This year, there are nine nominations, representing 15 light commercial vehicle brands, all in contention for the main prize. Once again, as per last year, there is a mix of diesel, battery-electric, and hydrogen powered vehicles on the long list,” he continues. “Presently, the jury is entering the election process, initially to decide on the shortlist and then to vote for the overall winner of the most prestigious and longest established award in the light commercial industry. Roll on IAA Transportation 2024!”
The International Cargo Bike of the Year and the ETM Award 2024 | Best of New Transportation will also be presented during IAA Transportation 2024 — the latter award for the first time. The best models, brands, and products will be recognised in 31 categories.
