FOUR TRANSPORTATION INDUSTRY PREDICTIONS FOR 2025

The transportation industry has travelled a winding road in 2024. Christopher Keating, senior vice president Trimble Transportation Europe, writes that hopes for a swift recovery from the turbulence of previous years were countered by lingering economic headwinds, geopolitical uncertainties, and persistent challenges that kept the sector in a state of cautious anticipation.

LCV Sales

Domestic sales of new light commercial vehicles, bakkies and minibuses, at 9,901 units during January 2025, recorded a decrease of 993 units, or a reduction of 9.1%, versus the 10,894 light commercial vehicles sold during January 2024.

MCV Sales

Sales of medium commercial vehicles, at 569 units in January 2025, recorded an increase of 59 units, or growth of 11.6% versus the 510 units sold in January 2024.

HCV Sales

Sales of heavy commercial trucks and buses, at 1,398 units in January 2025, recorded a decrease of 40 vehicles, or a reduction of 2.8%, versus the 1,438 units sold in the corresponding month last year.

Stig Hoffner works at Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolag (LKAB), a state-owned Swedish mining company. The company mines iron ore at Kiruna and Malmberget in northern Sweden. Hoffner loves his job so much that he doesn’t want to retire. Why? Because he gets to drive Scania’s electric truck every day.
