He started as a maintenance engineer in 1995. More than 30 years later, he’s helping steer the future of one of South Africa’s most important vehicle manufacturers…
Johan Vermeulen has been appointed Executive Vice President: Manufacturing and Product Engineering at Isuzu Motors South Africa – and joins the company’s Board of Directors.
It’s a major promotion for a man who has spent his entire career climbing the ranks.
Vermeulen now takes executive responsibility for manufacturing and product engineering across Isuzu’s locally produced D-MAX bakkies and commercial trucks in Gqeberha.
But what makes his leadership philosophy interesting isn't a fixation on titles or boardroom status. “My role may be changing, but my approach to leadership remains the same. Every role matters because every person has a different contribution to make,” he tells FOCUS. We could not agree more!

Residents are fed up with coal dust, congestion, damaged roads and hundreds of heavy trucks pounding through the area. And frankly, who can blame them?
But there’s a problem. 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝗸𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗻’𝘁 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮’𝘀 𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘀. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗱.
Ban the trucks without fixing rail and the coal doesn’t magically disappear. The mines still have customers. The ships still have sailing dates. The exports still have to move.
So, yes – get coal back onto rail. 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁, 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗹𝘆, 𝘄𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸?

Changan is proud to be the Exclusive Bakkie Partner for Truck Test 2026. Its Hunter diesels and K50 REEV bakkies (pictured) will transport team members and equipment and provide essential logistical support throughout the event, proving themselves in real working conditions.

“Just as South Africa’s economy relies on affordable, dependable and practical transport, so the Truck Test team is depending on Changan to deliver reliable vehicles throughout the gruelling event. We couldn’t be prouder to be part of this record-breaking challenge,” says Marinus Venter, Country Manager at Jameel Motors South Africa.

Back in South Africa after building its reputation as Chana, Changan continues to support entrepreneurs and small businesses, with Jameel Motors SA leading the rollout backed by a growing dealer and aftersales network.

SARS is moving diesel refunds out of the VAT system and into a standalone framework. This brings new registration requirements, mandatory participation by fuel suppliers, and likely closer scrutiny of records and substantiation.

🚜 The scheme is limited to specific activities, mainly farming, mining and forestry, plus certain offshore, harbour, rail-freight and electricity-generation operations. Ordinary road freight operators generally don't qualify, and SARS lists "carriage of goods for reward" as non-eligible use.

If you do qualify, now is a good time to:
✅ Review your diesel refund processes and record-keeping
✅ Check that your fuel suppliers are now registered
✅ Watch for further SARS guidance on substantiation requirements

If you're a road freight operator, this one isn't for you, but it's worth knowing about if your clients or partners operate in the qualifying sectors.

At a time when local manufacturing is under enormous pressure, Isuzu Motors South Africa is putting more money into its Gqeberha truck plant – and the investment is about far more than a factory facelift.

Nearly 𝗥𝟯𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 is being spent on upgrading commercial vehicle production, with changes spanning chassis and engine assembly, cab marriage, digital traceability, tooling, ergonomics and energy efficiency.

The objective? Build trucks more efficiently, improve quality control, make the plant safer for employees and prepare it for the next generation of commercial vehicles.

Isuzu says the investment reflects its confidence in South Africa’s people, industrial capability and long-term potential.

That is an important statement in an industry where investment decisions can just as easily go the other way.

The Gauteng Provincial Government has appointed a new Gautrain operator for the next 15 years (name still to be disclosed), and the plan on the table is ambitious:

✅ Bigger fleet: from 24 to 32 four-car trains, a 33.3% capacity boost
✅ Better service: more frequent trains and longer operating hours
✅ Upgraded stations: improved digital services and full backup power, so load-shedding won’t stop the system
✅ New routes: under the Gauteng Rapid Rail Integrated Network (GRRIN), new stations will link the network to Randburg and Lanseria airport
✅ Stronger feeder network: more bus routes and better bus-train integration
For commuters, that means shorter waits and more flexibility. For businesses near stations, from retailers and food vendors to logistics firms, it could mean more footfall as trains run more often and for longer.

🗓️ The upgrades will roll out progressively over the 15-year period. The Gautrain has logged more than 216 million trips since 2010, so there's a solid base to build on.

👀 One to watch: the Gau-Express e-hailing "last-mile" idea is still only at concept stage.

👉 How do you feel about the changes?

Leading Japanese truck and bus manufacturer, Hino, will once again tackle the gruelling Dakar Rally where it has already notched up 34 finishes from 34 events.

🛻 Hino Team Sugawara will compete in an improved version of the four-wheel drive, bonneted 600 Series truck that finished 15th in the 2026 event. The Hino 600 model is made for the North American market but is mechanically similar to the 500 Series Hino sold in South Africa.
Hino has been the sole representative of the Japanese truck industry in the Dakar Rally for more than three decades. This will be the first time that Hino will also be representing the Archion Group, which was founded earlier this year as a joint venture between Hino and Mitsubishi Fuso.

👤Teruhito Sugawara, son of the founder of Hino Team Sugawara, will once again be the driver in a race he has now finished 20 times consecutively.

🛠️ Hino Motors Japan has once again recruited technicians from dealerships in Japan to provide back-up support on the event, as well as being involved in the pre-race preparation of the truck. This system has been used since 1995 and has already brought 67 technicians from 32 countries to the rally, with huge benefits in upskilling their ability under arduous conditions.

💡 The 2027 Dakar Rally will take place from 1-15 January and will start and finish in King Abdullah Economic City along the Red Sea on the west coast of Saudi Arabia. Competitors will follow a route of about 8,000km over 14 days with limited supplies and equipment.

Martin Liebenberg has been appointed Head of Commercial Vehicles at BYD South Africa.
It’s a fascinating appointment – and one that is bound to get the industry talking.
Liebenberg is well known in South Africa’s commercial vehicle sector, most recently through his involvement with Iveco. Now he is heading to BYD, at a time when the Chinese manufacturer is pushing aggressively into the global truck market. BYD recently showcased a major new commercial vehicle offensive at IAA Transportation 2026.
So what prompted the move from Iveco? And, perhaps more importantly, what does BYD have planned for the South African truck market?
👀 We suspect this appointment could be very significant.

Water & Sanitation Minister Pemmy Majodina is urging municipalities to reduce their reliance on emergency tankers to reduce opportunities for criminal infiltration.

🚨 This comes as corruption, infrastructure theft and sabotage disrupt water services, and several provinces in the country report water losses exceeding 50%.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has received complaints alleging that municipal workers and other officials are sabotaging infrastructure to secure repair work and tanker contracts.

🗣️ “It is well-known across South Africa that the tanker mafias are very well entrenched,” says water scientist Dr Anthony Turton.

💸 Themba Fosi, former head of utilities, regional operations and coordination for Tshwane, said the municipality spends around R98 million on water tankers annually.

The Portfolio Committee on Water & Sanitation has called for stronger controls over tanker procurement, including a possible solution of municipalities acquiring and managing their own emergency fleets.

🔎 Minister Majodina said the department is participating in the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) to strengthen efforts against infrastructure theft, sabotage and corruption in water-tanker provision.
