The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate has joined the Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS). The BIGRS is an initiative that supports a global network of over 30 cities, to implement evidence-based interventions to reduce traffic fatalities and injuries.

🛻 The partnership will include technical assistance and training from experts in the world’s leading road safety organisations, which will greatly benefit the City’s Transport Planning & Network Management team as they implement Cape Town’s recently approved Road Safety Strategy. The City will be receiving four full-time professionals based at the City for a period of four years.

The projects which will stem from this new partnership will be managed by the City’s Urban Mobility Directorate in close partnership with Traffic Services.

🗣️ “The launch of this exciting partnership is perfectly timed as our transport planning teams embark on the implementation of the City’s recently approved Road Safety strategy, which ultimately directs our efforts in making Cape Town’s roads safer and reducing the number of accidents and loss of life. We are aligned to what we know is one of the greatest drivers for the BIGRS, which is to assist cities in creating a transport system that allows people to move safely and efficiently,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas (pictured right).

In his new role as managing director of ZF Services South Africa and sub-regional head for Sub-Saharan Africa and the DomTom regions, Maic Dressen will lead the company’s South African operations and support ZF Aftermarket’s continued development across the African continent.

💡 Dressen has +20 years of experience in the international automotive aftermarket, starting in South Africa in 2002 with an internship at BMW which sparked a lasting affinity for the African continent. This led him to ZF Trading where he took a role as key account manager for the Middle East and Africa. He later gained valuable experience in the original equipment (OE) sector before returning to the automotive aftermarket, where he has held various international leadership positions.

Before rejoining ZF, Dressen served as VP of Sales for the Middle East, Africa and India at a German automotive parts manufacturer.

🗣️ “The OE sector gave me important insights into the automotive industry from a different perspective. However, I quickly realised that the aftermarket is where I feel most at home. It is a people-driven business built on trust, personal engagement and long-term relationships – and that is what motivates me,” says Dressen.

🌍️ South Africa is one of ZF’s longest-established locations globally and plays an important role within the wider regional organisation. Its experienced local team, technical capabilities and established infrastructure provide a strong foundation for supporting customers and partners in other African markets.

Bandag, a world leader in retreading technology and tyre performance solutions, has been named the official tyre partner of Truck Test 2026, the landmark evaluation being organised by FOCUS on Transport & Logistics from 10 to 12 November.

🚚 The appointment places one of the commercial transport industry’s most experienced tyre performance specialists at the heart of a test that will see 20 extra-heavy trucks from 13 manufacturers put through their paces on the demanding Johannesburg-Durban-Johannesburg route.

🗣️ “Tyres are sometimes viewed simply as a consumable, but their influence on the overall efficiency of a vehicle is far greater than that,” says Monal Naik, marketing manager for Bandag Southern Africa.

“They affect rolling resistance, fuel consumption, vehicle uptime, safety and ultimately cost per kilometre. When you are comparing the performance of 20 trucks under controlled conditions, the tyre component therefore has to be treated with the same seriousness as every other technical variable.”

🚨 𝗘𝗹 𝗡𝗶𝗻𝗼 𝗶𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲

Since mid-2023, El Niño’s weather extremes have been squeezing supply chains on land, sea and air. The most visible casualty is the Panama Canal – the strategic waterway linking the Atlantic and Pacific.

⚓️ The canal historically handles ~1,000 ships a month, carrying 40M+ tonnes of goods (5% of global maritime trade). The US-built canal’s main users are the US, China, Japan, Chile and South Korea.

As of 3 September, the canal operator will start cutting the number of ships passing through it because of low water levels in two artificial lakes that feed the canal – the result of prolonged drought in Central America caused by El Niño. The lakes also provide water for half the local population of 4.2 million people.

📉 By 15 September, the number of ships allowed to transit will drop to 32 per day.

⏱️ Waiting times for ships without reservations will increase. Those slots are auctioned off. Before the Middle East war the average winning bid in these auctions was $135,000. But in April one transport company desperate to transit paid an astronomical $4m.

🗺️ Logistics giants like DHL have had to reroute cargo from the US East Coast to the West Coast just to keep goods moving.

The knock-on effects include delays, increased freight costs, contract renegotiations and legal exposure for carriers and shippers alike.

😳 Uncomfortable truth: climate change may be making El Niño events more frequent and more severe. So this isn’t a one-off disruption but rather a preview of what’s ahead for global logistics.

👉 Adapting to a less predictable climate is becoming the new baseline.

Bringing the competitor total to 20 trucks, IVECO has entered Truck Test 2026 – the largest extra-heavy vehicle comparison ever staged in South Africa.

🛣️ Thirteen of the world’s leading OEMs are putting their vehicles through real-world conditions from 10-12 November, all chasing the productivity index: litres burned versus average speed sustained over the route.

🚚 IVECO’s entry is built with that equation in mind. Under the bonnet of the S-Way Frontier 560 AS440S56TZ ON+ is the 560 HP Cursor 13, which delivers 2500Nm of torque through a 12-speed HI-TRONIX automated transmission.

A 2.83 rear axle ratio keeps engine RPMs low at cruising speed, while ECO-ROLL, ECOSWITCH and ECOFLEET work together in the background, trimming consumption on descents and adjusting shift and performance parameters to the load.

If you still think electric trucks are only suited to short-haul distribution, MAN is about to give you something to think about.

On 14 September at IAA Transportation 2026, MAN will officially pull the covers off its new eTGX – and the numbers are seriously impressive.

The headline figure? Up to 720 km of range without intermediate charging.

The new 6x2 tractor can be specified with seven batteries and 644 kWh of total capacity, while a new top-of-the-range electric motor produces 598 hp.

The price of fuel is set to increase sharply this Wednesday night (2 September) at 24h00, mainly due to higher international prices.

⛽️ Diesel will increase by 11,23% or 11,71%, depending on the amount of sulphur, while both grades of petrol will increase by 5,27%.

Ongoing geopolitical tension, surging risk and supply-and-demand issues will continue to float high fuel prices, says Gavin Kelly, CEO of the Road Freight Association – making adaptability essential for South Africa’s freight sector.

🗣️ “These increases will place further pressure on household budgets and raise operating and distribution costs across the economy,” says Brandon Cohen, chairperson of the National Automobile Dealers’ Association (NADA), a proud association of the Retail Motor Industry Organisation (RMI).

“For motorists, fuel efficiency and the total cost of vehicle ownership will become even more important considerations when purchasing a vehicle.”

💵 The increases may also add to inflationary pressure, potentially presenting the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) with difficult decisions on whether to hold or increase interest rates at its next Monetary Policy Committee meeting.

It was an honour to attend the Cyril Ramaphosa Education Trust (CRET) Graduate Recognition and Partnership Evening 2026, celebrating the achievements of the CRET Class of 2025 and the young people building brighter futures through education, skills and opportunity.

Since its inception, CRET has supported 830 young people, including:

🎓 436 tertiary students
🎓 275 graduates
🛠️ 394 skills development beneficiaries
🚛 97 driver training beneficiaries
👁️ 76 eye tests and 61 pairs of spectacles
🌍 Representation from all nine provinces
🤝 4 students supported through the CRET Alumni Trust

But CRET does more than fund education and tuition. It removes the practical barriers that can affect progression, confidence and employability.

For many graduates, earning a qualification is only the first step. A strong academic record and a hard-won degree can still be held back by one missing requirement: a valid driver’s licence.

🛣️ At the heart of the VL 550 is a WEICHAI WP13550 E30 Euro 3 engine, delivering an impressive 405kW at 2,000rpm, together with 2,300Nm of torque. With a 12.54-litre displacement, the engine provides the pulling power needed to handle demanding loads and long-distance routes – including Truck Test – with confidence.

🦺 Safety and braking performance are key features, and driver comfort has also been prioritised.

**𝗠𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗹𝗹! 𝗠𝗔𝗡 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗸𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗶 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀**

A major investment in eThekwini’s transport infrastructure is opening new possibilities for inclusive public transport, with MAN buses helping to make mobility more accessible across the city.

Last Friday, eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba officially accepted new additions to the municipality’s vehicle fleet. The municipality currently operates 443 MAN vehicles.

Among the 56 buses delivered by MAN Truck and Bus SA, four are fitted with German-produced, fully automated wheelchair lifts, giving passengers who use wheelchairs far easier access to public transport.

MAN head of sales and product bus Giacomo Virgili says accessibility should be considered when buses are specified.

“eThekwini is among the first nationally to introduce buses equipped with this technology. The lifting mechanism needs to be incorporated during the manufacturing process, so it is important that accessibility requirements are considered when new buses are specified. MAN is keen to support municipalities around the country as they work towards making public transport more accessible and improving mobility for all South Africans,” he says.

The specially adapted buses are expected to serve Umlazi, Clermont, KwaMashu, Newlands East and West and Inanda.

eThekwini Municipality Disability Forum chair Lindokuhle Mkhize says the handover reflects the municipality’s commitment to service delivery.

“These buses will allow employees with disabilities to serve with dignity,” he says.

MAN completed the full order within just two months, supported by its assembly plants in Pinetown and Olifantsfontein.

The new buses are also expected to reduce fuel consumption, with the municipality estimating annual diesel savings of around 150,000 litres.

For passengers who have struggled to access conventional public transport, the new buses represent an important step towards greater independence, dignity and inclusion.

🎂 The box that “made the world smaller and the world economy bigger” is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, and what better time than now to read up on its history in FOCUS, including the achievements made in South Africa by the country’s own containerisation pioneer.

When Grindrod opened SA’s first container depot and service in 1971, containerisation was becoming a global phenomenon, and South Africa needed operators willing to build the infrastructure to keep pace. Grindrod was one of them.

🌍️ The organisation was founded by Captain John Grindrod in 1910 as a clearing and forwarding agency. While it may have taken another 60 years to launch South Africa’s containerisation sector, today Grindrod is a JSE-listed freight and logistics group with subsidiaries, joint ventures and associated companies spanning 21 countries across the globe.

🏗️ Grindrod’s container logistics network handles everything from dry bulk commodities to refrigerated cargo, connecting inland supply chains with ports and global markets.
