Driving Change in the Transport Infrastructure SectorThe 11th International Heavy Haul Association (IHHA) conference, due to take place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre between September 2 and 6, will share global expertise on how to improve efficiencies, safety and viability of the bulk freight industry and how to accelerate industrialisation.

According to the organisers, years of underinvestment in transport infrastructure – not only in terms of roads and rail but also ports – has led to an infrastructure deficit on the African continent of R1,28 trillion a year. This has made it expensive for companies to move goods within the region and harder for them to deliver raw materials from production areas to markets.

The conference aims to address this, as well as the slowdown in demand for freight bulk commodities such as coal and iron-ore.

With the theme “Advancing heavy haul technologies and operations in a changing world”, the five-day conference will focus on industry research and innovation on how the sector can advance heavy-haul technologies, rail expansion plans and global technological advancements.

The keynote speaker from the World Economic Forum will cover the next industrial and technological revolutions for railways.

The event brings together over 1 000 heavy-haul rail executives, professionals and engineers, with representatives from over 25 countries including the United States, Australia, India, Russia, China, Brazil, Canada, Sweden, Norway and African countries.
