Transport-sector cyber security Cisco has released the 2017 Midyear Cybersecurity Report, which, for the first time, includes findings related to the transport sector.

The report makes it apparent that no industry is safe, and that attackers base their campaigns on opportunity and whichever industry presents the best return on investment. However, risk concerns do vary by industry.

Regarding the transport sector, 54 percent of transport security professionals follow a standardised information security policy practice, while two-thirds said they follow formal written security strategies.

It is clear, however, that once transport organisations build complex and connected infrastructure – and see the impact of the growing network surface – different threats come to light.

Some 31 percent of respondents said their organisations lost revenue, due to attacks in the past year, with the average revenue loss at nine percent.

Other common themes covered in the report include:

• The rapid evolution of threats and the magnitude of attacks are leading researchers to forecast potential “destruction of service” attacks. These attacks eliminate an organisation’s backup and safety nets that are needed to restore systems and data after an attack.

• The promise of the Internet of Things brings organisations new opportunities and new threats – more operations are online, which is increasing attack surfaces, scale and impact.

• Actionable steps to protect data and digital assets that are critical to business growth.
