Edutrans: averting a crisis
The skills shortage is one of the greatest challenges that this industry has ever faced. It MUST be addressed now! Enter Edutrans, proudly brought to you by Charmont Media - publisher of FOCUS on Transport & Logistics magazine...

The ever-increasing skills shortage is a massive problem: young people are not entering the “wheels game”. Ask most teenagers today about their prospective careers, and these will more often than not entail grandiose dreams within the fields of IT, marketing or finance.

The problem is that they’re simply unaware of the many exciting opportunities available to them; they believe that career prospects in the transport and automotive industries are limited to that of diesel mechanic or driver. What is desperately needed to remedy this current misconception is a focused, user-friendly annual guide to the fascinating world of wheels.

Enter Edutrans
The aim of Edutrans (a combination of the words ‘educate’ and ‘transport’) is to target high school learners who are on the verge of contemplating their projected career paths. We want them to enter the wheels game!

Due to its inherent youth focus, important emphasis needs to be placed on the content, style and tone. Recipients of the material will need to relate to the manner in which the information is being conveyed. Young people are technology savvy and as a result, are highly discerning readers. The team at FOCUS believes that a publication that speaks to the hearts and minds of these impressionable teenagers will be invaluable in opening the road of possibility into our industry.

This project is intended to complement the various career paraphernalia distributed by the Department of Education. The initial print run of 50 000 copies will be distributed from trucks and motor vehicles (including racing cars) at schools in leading centres. As you know, Hino is one of the confirmed partners in this venture, so we would use a Hino truck. Extra copies will also be made available to school libraries and other educational institutions, such as technikons. We hope to promote the book on television as well. In future years, we would hope to distribute Edutrans at townships throughout the country.

This project aims to cover various relevant topics, which include:
• Overview of the automotive and transport industry in South Africa
• Why should I consider a career in the automotive and transport industry?
• What opportunities are available and what qualifications are required? This will also outline the various automotive and transport industry-related qualifications currently on offer by tertiary institutions.
•  A comprehensive list of careers within the ‘wheels game’. This will include practical advice for learners, explaining to them how they can enter the industry and the many benefits associated with being a part of our vibrant industry. We will explain the benefits of each job, the qualifications required, the personality to which the job is suited, the expected earnings and the career prospects.

In addition to the Department of Education, the Department of Transport and the Department of Trade and Industry, we envisage obtaining an endorsement of the project from the following industry associations:

ACRA - Automotive Component Remanufacturers’ Association
CILTSA - Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport
ERA - Engine Remanufacturers’ Association
